Title sequence for ‘Yussef Dayes in Japan’: part documentary, part live performance, 100% a study of Japan’s audiophile and music-obsessive culture.

The sequence was mostly influenced by the legendary album covers of Blue Note’s art director, Reid Miles, with motion cues driven by the order and chaos of Tokyo’s labyrinthine traffic.

Peep the full video on YouTube on the loudest speakers possible- the sound mixing alone deserves its accolades.

‘Yussef Dayes in Japan’ Presented by @audiotechnicajp

Directed by @nickdwyernz @smkng
Edited by @andynagashima

Opening title sequence, chapter intertitles, and end card for @thesweeteast !

Created close to 80 individual cards, all custom drawn by hand then photographed on 16mm with a 40-year old Oxberry Animation Stand. We looked at a ton of different references from the posters of Borowczyk, the typography of the Declaration of Independence and the intertitles of D.W. Griffith to land on this visual direction. The end result is an assembly of unexpected imperfections that I believe accurately represents the practical effects and rawness of the film.

Am not going to post the full sequence but swipe to see a small portion of the long process we went through. Go see @thesweeteast !

Out now!

1: Main title
2-5: Sketches of cast, crew and main title cards
6: Photographing the title cards on the Oxberry Animation Stand. Shoutout to @mononoawarefilm for this!
7: 16mm scan (sped up at 600%)
8: Chapter intertitles (these were also photographed on 16mm and superimposed onto B-Roll footage Sean took on location)
9: A snippet of the final opening title sequence
10: End card - “Everything Will Happen”

‘The Sweet East’
Directed by Sean Price Williams
Written by @xnickpinkertonx
Edited by Stephen Gurewitz

“I watched this film and enjoyed it” - Vincent Gallo

Two posters I designed for @oitsliver short film, ‘Wild Bill Horsecock’. Originally part of the 2020 NYFF and Slamdance program, the short was eventually pulled due to backlash towards the films protagonist and anti-hero, Wild Bill Horsecock. It’s finally getting it’s theatrical debut this Friday, October 22nd at @cinemavillage , as part of the @npcc.nyc festival. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this banned film!
