the dress i designed after i was raped
a few months ago i began to design this dress in my head while in the back of an ambulance, i started adding the imaginary finishing touches to my design while waiting in a hospital ward. i was trying to keep my head focused on something familiar after months and months of what seemed like a never-ending mental health crisis following being raped and physically hurt last year
i had just seen a nurse who had asked me if i could describe how i was feeling as best i could, i had told her ‘i feel like someone’s taken all my skin off’
i felt like i had had my skin peeled off, like i’d lost my ability to heal, lost my ability to protect myself, had my identity stripped away.
this dress is an attempt to manufacture that feeling of having no skin, feeling raw, feeling exposed, feeling hurt
as a society we don’t like to think about the reality of sexual violence, the feelings and the fallout of it. we treat it as a singular event to overcome, we don’t think about the aftermath.
i feel as if i have lost nearly a full year of my life, this has impacted all areas of my health, my career, my creativity, my relationships with the people closest to me. i’m one of too many who know this feeling.
sexual violence ruins lives, it can end lives. the process of recovery, of growing back your skin, is long and difficult and while you’re doing it feels impossible.
i hope that with this design i can communicate how it feels to navigate the world after an experience like this
if you’re familiar with the things i’ve experienced please reach out to the people you trust. there are people and services that can help you. i’d like to mention a couple of specific places that have helped me - firstly ‘galop’, a support service for lgbt+ victims of abuse and violence. their helpline is 0800 999 5428 and their email is help@galop.org.uk. secondly ‘the listening place’, a free and confidential support service for those experiencing suicidal thoughts, their website is listeningplace.org.uk & their phone is 02039067676

inspired by the idea of a wound leaving scars and the Japanese art of Kintsugi, this relaxed fit jacket has been deconstructed & ‘fixed’ back together with a contrasting blood red textile to metaphorically mimic the raised scars of a healed wound
