Learn to Earn is an NPO partnering with the unemployed in training market related skills and job creation initiatives

My name is Thoko and I am currently doing Basic Sewing Skills course at Learn to Earn Khayelitsha. I heard about LtE through a friend who did the course and recommended it to me because she knew how interested I am in sewing. She gave me all the information I needed to know about the course application process. I added my name to the list when it was open and then came to the assessment day, which I passed, I then registered for the course.
We first had pre-orientation which was basically an information session about Learn to Earn. On the day we started I had mixed feelings - nervousness to start something new and meet new people from different places and backgrounds, and excitement of starting something which I wanted to do in a long time. I had no knowledge of sewing or where to start.
The first day in class was about class rules, exit outcomes and all the information concerning our time in class. We were then introduced to the sewing machines, learning to name and identify sewing machine parts, threading the sewing machine, winding a bobbin, controlling the sewing machine by sewing straight lines and measuring using tape measure.
At first, it was difficult to learn all of this at the same time but with determination, focus and pushing myself, I had to overcome my fears and win this challenge. Ever since joining Learn to Earn, I can see that my confidence is growing. So far, I have finished sewing my straight lines, a table runner and a pillowcase. I cannot wait to learn everything that Learn to Earn has in store for me. Thank you Learn to Earn.

Earlier today our Khayelitsha campus had a visit from some of the team at Sikhule Sonke ECD.
Sikhule Sonke is a Khayelitsha community-based organisation focusing on childhood development in Khayelitsha, they do this by providing access to quality ECD services, training and resources. We were excited to share a cup of hope from @groundupsa as well as the programmes offered at our campus, and different ways of supporting the work that both organisations do in the community of Khayelitsha.

My name is Busisiwe, I am a LtE Basic Computer graduate.
At the age of 46, I was in the same class as young one’s in their mid-twenties. I had anxiety because I was going to be studying with them not knowing that I was going to be motivated and even change my lifestyle. I was a quiet person but now I interact with people every day because of the skills I acquired and the prayerful life I adopted.
.
The first time I sat in front of the computer it was with fear of this big machine I had seen in offices. I told myself to focus and not to be intimidated by the fact that the young ones were very good with technology and social media. I was competing with them especially when doing typing skills, not knowing that I was training my speed to capture my client’s data. Doing group work was a good thing as that broke my shy shell, challenged me and taught me to interact with people.
.
LtE changed my life because now I am employed! I love my job and LtE’s Life Skills programme equipped me to believe in myself and be confident. I am permanent and now work 6 days a week. Soon I will be promoted to a cluster leader because of the certificate I received from LtE and my hard work.
.
I am proud of achieving my short-term goal of completing the computer course. I would recommend this course, especially to those people who are single parents who have a desire to work and provide for their children. After I finished my Basic Computer course and experiencing all that Learn to Earn offers I enrolled my daughter in the Shop Assistant course.
.
I want to thank the donors who made everything possible for the students to earn respect in their homes. The salary I am earning gives me a voice. I am now a provider and don’t rely on my siblings for handouts.
.
Computer Essentials is offered at LtE Khayelitsha and Hermanus campuses.

Freedom Day is the commemoration of the first democratic elections held in South Africa on 27 April 1994.These were the first post-apartheid national elections to be held in South African where anyone could vote regardless of race.
How old were you in 1994 and do you have any memories of the day?

My name Sizabanomzi, I am 43 years old mother of 3 boys, I stay in Khayelitsha. After I lost my job I had not been working for 18 long months. I saw a post on social media about Learn to Earn and the Basic Sewing course. I followed the details and applied - I didn’t know anything about sewing. To my surprise when I got to Learn to Earn, I found out that it’s a Christian organisation. We started our day with prayer and devotion. Going to church was rare, even opening the Bible was not my thing, I only prayed when life was giving me lemons!
After attending the discipleship course, I was able to start conversations with God, to confidently open up a Bible, read the scriptures and then apply it to our day life. The Life Skills classes helped me identify my weak points and my strengths. I was grateful to be part of Alpha Day where we were given a tool that will last a lifetime, provide guidance in our day to day lives and answer all our problems, a Bible.
While on campus all students spend time in our Life Skills classroom, learning new tools and techniques that can make living life a little easier.

Good day, Sir/Madam.
I hope this email finds you well.
Please see the important things that I have learnt during the Computer Essentials course:
• First of all, the reason why I will spread word of mouth is because this organization is meeting us halfway, because the fees that we are paying is not the cost of the course. Learn to Earn is paying a lot of money for our courses.
• I learnt that Learn to Earn is not just an organization like others, it is the organization that is putting God in front. People here let God lead the way and they follow. Every Wednesday they have Church and this helps a lot, because it is where people are connecting with Father God. I learn a lot about the bible because every morning we share the word of God.
• I learnt Introduction to Computer, Introduction to Windows and Introduction to Microsoft Word.
• I learnt to take care of my space and how to take care of the computer in order for them to function very well all the time.
• These things are important to learn because I was not used to them so now I have a better understanding about them.
• I'm very proud of myself for choosing Learn to Earn because if I never came here I was not going to gain the information and the knowledge that I have today.
• Also Learn to Earn is changing people's minds. People were negative thinking but today they are thinking positive because of the power and name of God.
Regards Nosizwe
