New shipment: Aphelion - McLaren Vale, South Australia
Working with top vineyards in McLaren Vale, Rob and Louise Mack are producing a range of wines that showcase the region’s diverse terroir –
right down to unique plot-by-plot bottlings. David Sly (Decanter Magazine) paid them a visit recently…
‘I kept addressing the question of how to allow each vineyard site to shine, and that presented fresh challenges with every vintage. It was as much an intellectual exercise as a physical task, and I absolutely adored the focus it demanded.’ - Rob Mack (winemaker).
Grenache, in the hands of McLaren Vale’s most astute producers, has become Australia’s take on grand cru – rare, idiosyncratic and expressive, indicative of exemplary sites. Much of it hinges on the age of the vines, which run up to 120 years. Blewitt Springs – home to the Brini family vineyard – is an especially sought-after subregion of McLaren Vale. Its soils are characterised by deep sands and pockets of ironstone.
A constant feature of the winery’s portfolio has been Confuence, a clever regional blend designed to show Grenache’s rich savoury mid-palate. It brings together fruit from different Blewitt Springs sites, with a range of winemaking techniques applied to different parcels, from whole-bunch ferments to extended maceration. It captures the magic mix of sharp, youthful vigour and smouldering old-vine persistence supported by supple
tannins.

Meet the makers: Wednesday June 4th we will have Skye and Charlie of @paralianwines pouring their wines for consumers at @dans.ldn in London. Coming and meet this winemaking couple and learn all about their passion project which is rapidly gaining pace (and a loyal following) back in Australia and now abroad. Grenache is a focus, but really their main goal is highlighting the potential of the old vines at their Springs Hill vineyard at their home base in McLaren Vale. Please join us for what will be a fantastic evening. This is a ticketed event - ticket sales through Dan’s.

This is already sold out 👏 but we’re stoked to having @viningstreetwineclub getting behind @worldsapartwines for this event this coming week. For those with tickets, we’ll see you there

In the first week of June, we welcome Skye and Charlie of @paralianwines in McLaren Vale, South Australia to London.
If you’re in the trade and would like to request an appointment, please get in touch.
We have a couple of events planned with Paralian:
For the wine trade: Tuesday June 3rd we are teaming up with our friends at @liberty_wines to host a comparative tasting focussing on the wines of Blewitt Springs. Here we will look at the Paralian Wines alongside the @willunga100 wines, hosted by David Gleave MW, Skye and Charlie. This is an invitation-only event.
For consumers: On Wednesday June 4th, Skye and Charlie will takeover the bar @dans.ldn for the evening. This is the public’s chance to come and meet the pair and gain valuable insight into their viticultural and winemaking practices, while tasting the wines themselves. Event details and tickets via Dan’s socials - soon to be announced.
We hope to see you at one of our events in June.

This week I had the pleasure of attending a Sailor Seeks Horse masterclass in Sydney, hosted by vignerons and winemakers Paul (an Englishman) and Gilli (from Brisbane), where they opened nearly all of the wine they have produced under their Sailor Seeks Horse label.
Sailor Seeks Horse is located on Tasmania’s Huon Valley, south of Hobart, right on the margins of viticultural possibilities.
A tiny amount of Pinot was produced in 2012, following their purchase of their site a year earlier. That wine was never commercially released, yet the wine is incredible. Last time I had it was standing in the vineyard about five years ago, and to see it now (at thirteen years of age) is another memorable experience.
2013 was their first ‘proper’ release of Pinot and the wine is nothing short of astonishing. Burgundian comparisons are unavoidable here: it has so much elegance, finesse and fine detail that you could easily be in Chambolle or Morey.
The Chardonnays, too, are extremely impressive. Vintages 2017, 2021 and 2023 were the real standouts. The ’23 is the new release (hitting the UK later this year) and includes all the fruit that often goes into their top bottling named ‘Huldufolk’. In this vintage, the decision was made to declassify that wine, meaning the ‘estate’ bottling is all the better for it. It seems as though Paul and Gilli have really found their feet with this wine, and the 2023 is arguably their best to date.
This tasting (27 wines in total) re-established my love of these wines – I honestly put theses reds in the top echelon of Australian Pinot Noir. The wines are medium bodied and unworked. Perhaps some people would prefer more fruit weight, but for me, the level of detail, finesse and elegance here is remarkable.
If this tasting showed anything it was the wines of Sailor Seeks Horse are built to age AND they get better with age. Anyone with some space in the cellar and a bit of patience should seriously consider putting some of these away… @sailorseekshorse
