Lakeside Collection
Modern and Contemporary Art Collection,
in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Member of the Netherlands Association
of Corporate Art Collections (VBCN)

‘I am the conductor of an orchestra. All the musicians are soloists, but together they form a single entity’ - Hester Alberdingk Thijm, director of the AkzoNobel Art Foundation.
The well-known Dutch magazine QUOTE (Design edition) has just published an extensive article on corporate art that highlights five prominent collection curators, alongside important quotes and points of view in the current context of collecting art.
Our director @hesteralberdingkthijm reinforced the effort towards creating a relevant and strong collection within an art foundation. This is a concept that reaches far beyond the initial idea behind corporate collections, to buy art and create a collection of artworks for the company itself. Furthermore she underlines the importancy of acting early, buying and supporting new talent when they present themselves to the public.
The article states: ‘Her foundation is rock-solid. The upcoming ReflAction exhibition looks back and ahead, complete with an exploration of key artists’. This exhibition will mark 30 years anniversary celebration of the AkzoNobel Art Foundation!
@danilacahen curator @abnamronl (slide 2) states that ‘artists are the antennae of society’ and that art can move people to tears.
Ali Keles, founding manager partner at @lakesidecollection (slide 3) reinforces that ‘art is not a possesion, but a lasting relationship’. He also makes the important remark that a quarter of all contemporary art sold in the Netherlands is bought for corporate collections.
Caroline Vos, chief curator at the @ingnederland Art Collection (slide 4) reflects that ‘art is a gentle force in the harsh world of finance’.
Last but not least @floor.haverkamp curator at @citizenm (slide 5): ‘Art next to your bed and above your suitcase. Every hotel is a new art project’.
In order to have a good understanding of the importance of the corporate collections, we need to realize that @verenigingbedrijfscollecties reunites 150.000 artworks and this is comparable with the entire collection of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum!

Caja Boogers (2001), ‘Heirloom’ 2025 art work, oil on linen, has become part of the Lakeside Collection.
This work by Caja Boogers combines image and gestures into an intimate yet elusive composition. Soft earthly tones and muted greens give the painting a quiet atmosphere. At the centre, the open book evokes the feeling of leafing through a photo album, revisiting personal memories that have begun to fade with time.
The loosely defined forms blur the boundaries of abstraction and figuration, inviting the viewer to imagine their own narrative. The unfinished edges and balance of shapes indicate a sense of vulnerability, making the work feel personal and contemplative.

Gijs Assmann (1966), ‘Flash (VI)’ 2025 art work, Glass, porcelain, wood, ostrich egg, stuffed bird became part of the Lakeside Collection.
This sculpture by Gijs Assmann captures the tension between vulnerability and resilience. The delicate balance of the pale egg atop a translucent pink form evokes the fragility of human emotion and the precariousness of existence. The organic shape of the glass suggests an inner life, tender and exposed, echoing an interest in the raw interiors of human experience. Its glossy surface both reveals and conceals, inviting viewers to reflect on what we protect, what we show, and what remains hidden. The work’s quiet strangeness aligns with an introspective approach, transforming personal symbolism into an universal emotional language. Through its careful composition and material sensitivity, the sculpture becomes a meditation on balance and care.

Krijn Kroes (1994), ‘Arum I’ 2024 art work, glazed ceramics, has since 2024 been part of the Lakeside Collection.
Arum I presents the arum plant which subtly shifts between shadow and light. The flower’s form is delicately suggestive, while much of the surrounding space is veiled in darkness or muted color, so that the bloom emerges as both motif and apparition. From a distance, the arum hovers in an atmospheric field, almost floating in memory. In the context of Letters to my Grandfather, this work acts as both homage to Kroes’s inherited archive of plant imagery and as a meditation on memory, presence, and loss. Consistent with Kroes’s style, Arum I balances between the recognizable and the enigmatic, inviting viewers to dwell in ambiguity, to see not just what is shown but what lingers unseen beneath the surface.

Hans op de Beeck (1969), ‘Asleep Girl’ 2021 art work, wood, steel, polyamide, polyester, and coating, has since 2021 been part of the Lakeside Collection.
In his recent series, Op De Beeck captures casual, banal moments of daily life in his soft gray, matte sculptures. Sleeping and dreaming are the hermetic states invoked by the artist in his work. Eyes closed and curled up on a sofa, ‘Asleep Girl’ submits to her dreams, her slumber separating her from the realm of the viewer. The sofa, a classic deep-buttoned Chesterfield, acts like a fortress, enveloping the young girl in its comfortable hold. The work captures a blissful moment of peace and quiet, it offers a meditative aura to its audience. The viewer becomes integrated into the artwork, standing from the position of a parent watching over their child’s sleep.
