We would like to take a moment of reflection to address the ongoing protests in our city, as our neighbors throughout Los Angeles stand up for our fellow community members. KYCC stands in solidarity with our immigrant clients, families, and community, advocating for our safety, security, and dignity as residents of Los Angeles' Koreatown, Pico Union, and Westlake. We will engage in discussions about upcoming events with our clients and community, ensuring that we can continue to provide essential services while prioritizing the safety of all of our residents. We believe that by working together, we can foster an environment of understanding and positive change. Our commitment to social justice and equity remains steadfast, and we are dedicated to amplifying the voices of those who are often unheard.

In challenging times like these, KYCC is a trusted resource to help provide safe spaces and meet the needs of our families, clients, and greater community. We love Koreatown — it's our home and we belong here.

Thank you for your ongoing trust, partnership, and support. #KYCCLA

Since 2013, KYCC’s Prevention Education program has been empowering youth leaders to take action through substance use prevention, advocacy, and civic engagement.
Last year alone, more than 80 youth ages 14–26 participated across five groups, YDAPP, LATAT, MYPARC, KARS, and KPWR, addressing substance use and broader social health issues impacting Koreatown, Pico Union, and Westlake.
Through leadership, collaboration, and community-driven solutions, these young leaders continue to create meaningful change where it matters most.

KYCC’s Recovery Services recently partnered with artist @rfx.one to create a new mural that brings warmth, healing, and a more welcoming environment to our treatment space. 💙

Having previously worked with KYCC, RFX1 returned to collaborate on this project and share his connection to the organization through his art. We’re grateful to continue creating spaces that foster healing, community, and care.

The mural was made possible through support from the Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC).

On May 5, KYCC’s Prevention Community Council (PCC) gathered for its annual reunion alongside our Executive Director to celebrate community leadership and prevention efforts across Koreatown, Pico Union, and Westlake. Since launching in 2016 with one adult leadership group, PCC has grown into four groups: Manos Unidas de John Liechty, Manos Unidas de Koreatown, Manos Unidas con Esperanza para la Comunidad, and Mujeres Transformando la Comunidad. This year’s reunion also recognized 15 PCC Leads and Representatives who continue mentoring members and strengthening community connections.

Each year, PCC engages more than 100 adult residents in culturally responsive leadership opportunities focused on substance use prevention, advocacy, and civic engagement. Through community-driven and culturally rooted prevention efforts, PCC continues helping create safer, healthier neighborhoods for youth and families. We encourage parents and adult residents to get involved and help foster a stronger culture of prevention and community leadership.

Healer Spotlight: Gwang-hun Kim

Kim Gwang-hun, a Korean-born acupuncturist, has lived in Koreatown, Los Angeles, since immigrating to the U.S. in 2000. Beyond his private practice, Kim has been offering free acupuncture treatments to dockworkers in Long Beach who lack access to medical care. He remains committed to community service and advancing the recognition of traditional Korean medicine in the U.S.

In his words: “Western doctors only know about acupuncture when it comes to oriental medicine. The needle. In oriental medicine, acupuncture also involves cupping. There is also herbal medicine, which uses natural herbs. We provide supplements with herbal medicine, and we also do physical therapy, but it is not a massage, and there are many different types of treatments. In addition to those, there is also Qigong. If you think about it from a Western perspective, Qigong is meditation. In the modern age, people experience a lot of stress and anxiety. Qigong or meditation releases that stress. In a way, there is an endless number of treatment methods in oriental medicine.”

As a partnership between Koreatown Storytelling Program and the Archive of Healing, the Koreatown Archive will facilitate access to the oral histories and knowledge of practitioners, like Gwanghun Kim, for community members and researchers alike.
