EXHIBITION: What We Carry Forward

Josephine Mick, Jane Russell and Lisa Khan: stories learned, carried and passed down through family. Together their works speak to inheritance: of story, strength and responsibility, reminding us that family knowledge shapes what we carry forward.

Josephine Mick was born at Alilyangu (near Pukatja) in the Pitjantjatjara Lands. Josephine began painting as a young woman, before there were any art centres in the West. She is a respected Ngangkari (traditional healer) with an extensive knowledge of bush medicines, and is acknowledged for her work across two cultures, as a senior custodian of Tjukurpa and as an advocate for her people. Josephine was the founding Director of NPY Women’s Council in 1982. Among many roles, Josephine was the Anangu supervisor for the Arts in Health doctoral study on the benefits of art centres to community by researcher Maree Meredith, supported by Ku Arts.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Lisa Khan

Lisa Khan's creative journey is deeply rooted in the strength of her two cultures. Her mother is a proud Yankunytjatjara, Antikirinya, and Pitjantjatjara woman, and her father an Ahmadiyyah Muslim from Pakistan. Growing up in Coober Pedy and later living in Alice Springs and the APY Lands, Lisa’s path has been one of movement, learning, and connection to Country.

Today she works from her private studio in Adelaide, carrying these experiences into every canvas she creates. Her practice bridges tradition and innovation, weaving cultural memory with contemporary expression. Guided by ancestral knowledge and the strength of living between two worlds, Lisa’s art is both a celebration and an offering; honouring her Aboriginal and Muslim heritage while sharing stories of resilience, identity, and belonging.

β€œI delve into the emotions associated with the disappearance of women's sacred spaces and rights. The health and spirituality of Aboriginal women are deeply intertwined with the land, our ancestral home”.

ARTWORK SPOTLIGHT: 'Connected by Water' by Melanie Koolmatrie.

β€œThis artwork reflects the deep cultural and spiritual connection that Ngarrindjeri people hold with water. For thousands of generations, ceremony has taken place along the shores of the lakes, river, and sea β€” places where community gathers, knowledge is shared, and identity is strengthened.

The flowing forms in the painting represent the interconnected waterways of Ngarrindjeri Country and the songlines that travel between them. These waters carry stories of creation, renewal, and belonging, reminding us that water is a living force that binds families, communities, and Country together.”
