KT Wong Foundation
The leading cultivator and producer of cultural collaboration and exchange between East and West.

Marvellous Realism opens in Hangzhou at the Winland Centre, bringing a landmark celebration of contemporary African photography to China. Following its acclaimed debut at Fotografiska Shanghai, where the exhibition welcomed more than 70,000 visitors, this new presentation continues to build momentum and introduces even more audiences to the power, depth and innovation of African visual storytelling.
Recognised as the largest presentation in Asia of contemporary photographic art by Africans and artists from the diaspora, Marvellous Realism brings together an exceptional group of internationally celebrated voices. Through portraiture, fashion, identity, memory and social commentary, the exhibition reveals the richness and diversity of African perspectives while challenging outdated narratives shaped by the colonial gaze. Photography becomes a space for reclaiming history, expressing individuality and imagining new futures.
Presented by the KT Wong Foundation, the exhibition reflects an ongoing commitment to strengthening cultural ties between Africa and China through art, music and performance. Opening in Hangzhou, a city known for blending heritage with innovation, adds another meaningful layer to this dialogue. The Winland Centre, located at the origin of the Grand Canal and beside the historic Xiangji Temple, creates a striking setting where past and present meet.
This moment also arrives as 2026 is recognised as the China Africa Year of People to People Exchanges, highlighting the growing importance of cultural collaboration and shared creativity. Marvellous Realism is more than an exhibition. It is an invitation to connect across borders, discover new narratives and experience the vision of artists shaping the global conversation today.

Yue Minjun is a leading figure in the Cynical Realism movement. He is known for paintings and sculptures featuring his own face locked in a maniacal, frozen grin. This exaggerated laughter is a tool for exploring themes like conformity, alienation, and satire in a rapidly changing society. His iconic imagery is widely recognized in both Eastern and Western art markets.

Shao Fan’s work invites us to attune ourselves to multiple registers of time, from the flash of a rabbit’s eye to the slow accumulation of ink on paper, from vegetal growth and geological weathering to the aeons embedded in the moon’s cratered surface.
Time moves here as a rhythmic flux of transformations through which matter, memory and consciousness remain, quietly and stubbornly, alive.
📍 ‘Refrain / 复沓’ will be on view until 27 June 2026 at White Cube Mason’s Yard.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show Revisited: I Dream, I Seek My Garden
The Gold Medal winning Chelsea Garden created in 2008 by Shao Fan, under the guidance and support of Lady Linda Wong – Davies was conceived not only as a garden, but also as a spiritual and philosophical statement. Part art installation, part metaphor, but all expressed through the art of garden making – a skill well known and highly developed by the Chinese over many centuries. It was inspired by the imperial Song dynasty, but with a contemporary sensibility.
