About a week ago my mind started to get cloudy. My vocabulary went out the door. My desire to sleep and simultaneous inability to do so hit me like a ton of bricks. Everything I touch started to break. My mind can’t stop wandering and can, at the same time, really only properly think about one thing- how much I miss my Dad.
It’s been one year since my Dad chose to leave. His whole life he battled with his mental health and this day a year ago it was finally too much. I imagine he likely regretted it the second he did it, but what was done was done. I want to call him, all the time. I want to send him animal pictures and tell him about the birds at my house, all the time. I want to ask him for advice and hear about his day, all the time. My heart hurts a lot, all the time.
This year has changed us all. It has taught me to sing louder, say I love you anytime I think it and to always try my absolute best to not let the darkness of my own mind win, even though this year there are days that is harder than it has ever been. I don’t want to spend today, or tomorrow, or any part of any day in sadness because that doesn’t serve his memory. He was not a sad man. He was a cheerful, silly, friendly spot of sunshine. And yet, it is HARD to not find yourself at rock bottom some days.
Check in with your loved ones. Tell them you love them like you mean it. Cherish every moment. Be present. Ask questions that go deeper than “what’s up?” And know that, sometimes, even if you do all of those things, it may not be enough to protect your heart from the pain of loss, but it will at least leave you with all the memories your heart can carry.
I love you Dad. I don’t hold anything against you for the painful choice you chose to make. I know how much you must have been hurting to get there and I know how hard you were trying to get better. If I could turn back time, I would this second.
You matter. Your life matters. You are loved.

Happy birthday Dad. I know you weren’t feeling great last year and didn’t want to party much, but I hope you get a chance to celebrate and smile today, in whatever way that manifests where you are. I can promise you I will be celebrating you today. I try to every day, and every day I wish I could call you to tell you. I’ll sing something ridiculous really loud just for you today. Maybe even in public. Love you Dad.
