🧿🎙️ Sitting with this one today…

I’m reading “My Mother Dreams Another Country” by Natasha Trethewey — from New Daughters of Africa (2019). Trethewey is a Pulitzer Prize–winning poet and two‑term U.S. Poet Laureate, whose work consistently shows how personal memory and broader social histories are deeply entwined.

Set in 1966 Mississippi, the poem imagines a mother’s inner world as she awaits a biracial child — contemplating the names, labels, and societal pressures her daughter may inherit. It’s a reflection on identity, belonging, and the persistent weight of history, where intimate care and systemic forces intersect.

📚 Today, I give thanks for books — for the ways they hold memory, challenge assumptions, and open windows into other lives and times. Whether celebrated, overlooked, or debated in public discourse, reading widely is how we engage with ideas that help shape a more thoughtful, hopeful world.

✨ Some poems, like some songs, don’t ask to be understood immediately…
they ask to be felt, reflected on, and carried forward.
