In 2019, soccer player @nicolajthomsen93 co-founded the menswear label @another_aspect. Now, he’s returning to his first love with his new role as CEO of B.93 (@b93fodbold), Copenhagen’s century-old soccer club.
“The idea is to push B.93 further in a hybrid direction: to treat the stadium as a cultural space as much as a sports venue. We’re thinking about art exhibitions, merchandise, collaborations with artists, and brand activations.”

Public bathing is a national pastime in Japan, but the practice was born out of necessity. In places like Edo, the city that became Tokyo, space was limited and hot water was expensive. Eventually, bathhouses, or sentō, became cultural hubs.
For The Clean Issue, we spoke with Jo Nagasaka, whose firm @schemataarchitects has recently designed three new sentō, in an attempt to keep the bathhouse culture alive.
“Sentō can’t be too stylish,” says Jo. “They need to be accepted by all people—it’s important that they don’t become the kind of place where grandparents feel they can’t relax. So, I suppose it needs a design similar to that of a cafeteria or a ramen shop.”

Saxophonist @cktrl on rediscovering his passion for music: “I had a corporate job from 19 to 26, where they weren’t used to young people, let alone a young Black person from inner-city London. That’s what brought me back to my instruments. If I’d had a shit week at work, I just played in the dark when I got home.”

@spencers.spa was conceived by Ryan McCarthy as an antidote to the cold, sterile atmosphere typically associated with spa culture. “I love hearing the gentle creak of the original floorboards in an old house as someone moves down the hall. It reminds me that the place is full of life. Our spas take the same approach.”

For The Clean Issue, we speak to artist @leonardkoren about WET, the cult magazine dedicated to “Gourmet Bathing.”
“Bathing is simply wonderful subject matter. Take the visual aspects: naked bodies in steam, water and like substances, bathing environments with otherworldly qualities of light and space. And then there are the many metaphorical associations: the transformation of dirty into clean, the quest for purity, transcendence, rebirth.”

What does “clean” smell like? According to scent designer and food historian Tasha Marks, founder of @avmcuriosities, the concept has evolved over time. “Relative to the past, we live in quite a sterile, odorless world,” she says. “But if you go back even a few decades, there are these very strong “clean” associations with certain fragrances.”

The dragon’s blood tree is unique to Socotra, a Yemeni island in the Indian Ocean, and has expertly adapted to the climate. The dense canopy captures the drizzle and mist during monsoon season and creates shade during periods of scorching heat. Featured in Kinfolk Islands.

In Issue Fifty-Nine, we explore a new generation of sustainable materials:
1. An algae-based alternative to plastic vinyl, dreamed up by designer Jessie French and produced by her studio, @other_matter.
2. Eelgrass, which @sould.dk considers “the ultimate sustainable material,” is collected from the remote Danish island of Læsø—traditionally used for roofing and now reimagined as acoustic panels.
3. At @smile.materials, yogurt containers, detergent bottles and even leftover tinsel are transformed into richly patterned panels for interiors and facades alike.

When the late French sculptor François Stahly established his atelier in the south of France, he had grand ambitions. “The idea that led my parents to establish their atelier here was to work in the middle of nature and invite young artists to join them,” explains his daughter.
Today, the property is owned by an investor and architecture admirer who plans to restore it to its former glory. “I haven’t shown it to anyone yet who didn’t say, ‘Wow.’”
