Just over a year ago, at 6pm on a Friday before four days of horse-related holidays, PV tried to sneak out an amended management plan for the Piles. It was a pile of shit. Big love to the Wimmera Massive who said yeah, nah. Same weekend a year later and the joint was thronging, at the Nati Frinj I saw a work by @dave_in_transience that calmed me down, a play about dying that made me sad, ate food that made me satiated, witnessed a 3-year-old’s first real climb (Piccolo, yo!!) that delighted me, run into mates in the street that made me happy, and climbed a route that we would not have been able to but for the yeah, nah. @ashleehendy on Les Memoires d’un Ane in the mugginess of the Organ Pipes Gully. Best times.

Scary Monsters up at the Citadel, not as scary or as monstrous as the name would have you think, and actually very good. The @northsideboulders cru larging it in the Gramps a wee while back on the Holds & High-5s tour - best stone, best times.
Appendix: if I had to choose one spotter for the ultimate spot, for the most dire of consequences, for the most perilous of situations, it would be @beubsmeuvs (with @roscotaylor a close second if Reubs was unavailable or incapacitated).

The Mallory Affect, a thing’s because-it’s-there-iness, blocs can exert it in the same way as the Great Ranges. Strong in features and lines, weak in grovels and drop-offs.
Darjeeling Limited in Trackside has it, it’s quite getontopy, even though it suffers under the crushing dominance of Taipan (which, obvs, is extremely big in Mallory Affect). The boulder stands free, a hanging prow of slimps and heels, one jug, a tall arête, a top to sit on as the late arvo sun pours yellows and oranges through the mouth of the amphitheatre.

The Morbid Optimist on Durin’s Bane at Mt Alex – a problem popular because it’s fun, steep, has a full hydra’s head of beta options, and does not require a whaling mantle.
Just after this shot, a huge mob of at least 50 roos thudded along the flattening contours at the bottom of the steep slope. At one point, it seemed it would never end, as if boulders had become animated and were moving as grey shadows flitting through thinning trees. Then we had a huge shouting match. Then we climbed a little bit more, but were much reduced.
The rock quality at Mt Alex is a reminder that not all geologic time is slow. There is some good stone and some not-so-good stone, many of the blocs are covered in a skrittle that grinds and slides as your feet scud across it, the effect of which gives the sense of the weathering of the elements being sped up. The good news is that still the granodiorite is unlikely to ever polish. Also, the Rosetta Stone is made of granodiorite, so perhaps the key to unlocking all movement lies somewhere on the blocs in the bush on the hillsides.

Takuya of the very big energy throwing down and falling up on Blackbeard’s Delight at The Bleachers. There is often a sweet light up on the hill, the tree cover shatters the midday sun into a lattice of hot spots and shadows, laying a camo-pattern over everything. It’s hard to photograph, but easy to be in.

Boi on big bloc by itself in the bush. The Big Issue (well named), a 5 or 6 with the hard bit right at the top, which is way up there as the bloc is big. Gen, repping for the @northsideboulders Massive, did it ground up without bothering with trifles like checking the top out, Damo (once one of the princelings of Halls Gap) reckons that would have been terrifying. It’s good to be around good climbers climbing.

Centurion is open again which means the best finger-crack in the Gramps is once more on like Donkey Kong. My video of Gouldy making the FFA disappeared when our old Vimeo account died a while back, and the sadness of closures begat an inertia of lassitude. But openness is feather-light, and a few cats have asked for it so I have chucked it on YouTube - if you’re one of the clamourers and beseechers you can find a link in my bio-yo.
