One year ago today, we lost Jennifer Barraza Mendoza — a brilliant leader, a fierce protector, and a beautiful soul.

Jennifer fought for people who too often went unseen, and she helped change Los Angeles for the better in ways that will endure for generations.

She led with courage, loyalty, and heart. And she is missed every single day.

Tonight the world saw what we have always known - our music, our stories, and our heritage shape the global stage. This Thanksgiving season we focused on giving back to the communities of Boyle Heights, El Sereno and Highland Park with back to back food giveaways filled with quality food like turkeys, organic chicken, vegetables and eggs. I’m grateful to be able to give back, especially during these trying times.

I want to thank all of our volunteers who helped make this happen and a special thank you to @worldharvestfoodbank @calvarychapelag , @michaelssir and @lapd_hollenbeck for all your support. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

In the wake of recent immigration raids, families in Boyle Heights and El Sereno are living in fear, even avoiding grocery stores. That fear has left dinner tables empty.

I stepped in to make sure our community had access to food this month. Fresh fruits and vegetables, not just canned goods, because our families deserve dignity and a healthy life.

No one in our city should go hungry.

Major shoutout to our volunteers including @proyectopastoral @calvarychapelag & @barrioaction for coming together to help us give back.

We set the standard. For three consecutive years, homelessness declined — one of only two districts citywide to see that progress. The latest count shows a 25% drop in street homelessness in CD14.

I’m proud to have led with urgency and focus. The results reflect years of determination, pressure, and real work.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court opened the door for an attack on birthright citizenship—a right that’s protected under the 14th Amendment.

What does that mean for first-generation Americans? It means the very foundation of what makes us American, being born here, is now under threat.

If birthright citizenship is weakened, millions of children born on U.S. soil to immigrant parents could be stripped of their citizenship, rights, and belonging.

We can’t let that happen. Our families helped build this country—we are America.

Today, we honored a true giant of California politics - my mentor, my friend, and one of the fiercest champions our communities have ever known. With the Alatorre family by my side, I was proud to witness the unveiling of the Richard Alatorre Legacy Corridor sign in the heart of our city.

This sign is more than a tribute — it’s a permanent reminder of a man who led with passion, commitment, and unwavering dedication to justice. Richard opened doors that had long been shut to our communities.
Today, his name stands tall in the Civic Center — exactly where it belongs.

Democracy doesn’t die overnight — it dies in plain sight. Today, California’s senior Senator, Alex Padilla, was silenced, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed by federal agents for doing the job he was elected to do — challenging the President’s military overreach in our state. This is authoritarianism, and our democracy is at stake.

As the author of California’s Sanctuary State law — Senate Bill 54 — and a lifelong immigrant rights activist, I see your fear. And I feel it too.

Trump is testing how far he can go, but we won’t be silenced. We’ve fought too hard to be pushed back now.

Protect yourselves. Know your rights. Stand together. This is our city and we’re not going anywhere.
