Finished my first sculpture!
This piece is about the shame I sometimes feel as a third culture kid. The shame and embarrassment in the fact that I don't belong anywhere. And this incapability of belonging in one culture/region is very obvious no matter how much I try to fill in the cracks (kintsugi)
For the cracks I made them reflect the shape of the three countries I grew up around (German, Singaporean, and American) and I pin pointed the places there most important to me by shaping the national flowers of each country. As for the mouth I was inspired by a literature disease called "hanahaki" as the disease represents the inability to repress a feeling. So I put all the national flowers together into a bouquet and tried to make it look like it was sprouting out of the mouth.

This is our home. No matter your race, gender, or religion you belong here. Let’s not forget what Singapore is built on.
(This took some courage knowing how the internet can be. But the fact that even white people experience racial alienation, fetishizing, and stereotyping in singapore, says a lot about how far we are from practicing Singapore's core values.)

Meet Tom. The Tomato. He doesn't know if he's a fruit or a vegetable. And in the end that doesn't even matter because he is Tom, the Tomato.
