The Odeon Leicester Sq is one of the few places that still *feels* like a cinema to me. It’s such an exciting, historic building to be in and remains an air-conditioned oasis of a refuge on a hot London afternoon. It manages to be clean and modern yet retain the old Oscar Deutch art deco glamour. It’s BIG and airy and when the trailers finish, you can hear the old familiar whirring noise as the screen changes shape in front of you to its widest, most cinematic aspect ratio. I adore this place. I’m proud to be a tiny part of its history and to have seen one of my own films on its mighty screen. I’m glad my daughter has had a proper cinema experience within it.
Oh, and that Mandalorian film is utter dogshit. Worth it for the cinema alone, though.

Full marks to RIVALS for one of the greatest TV easter eggs of all time! Unless I’m very much mistaken, in the scene where everyone is dancing to The Chicken Song (one of the greatest moments in British TV since they all danced to The Birdie Song in season 1) Rupert Campbell Black is grabbed and kissed by a random drunken woman. I’m pretty positive that woman was Kate Robbins (mother of fellow cast member Emily Atack) who, of course, was one of the singers of said Chicken Song. I flippin’ love Rivals.

This is what happens when AI goes unchecked. It might seem fun to make a prompt which will bring to life the album cover of Band On The Run for stage visuals, but what you end up with is a sinister, lingering close-up of multiple child-rapist Clement Freud.

Amazing morning with the kid at the BFI. Guillermo Del Toro doing a Q&A about his animated shows. The guy is a legend and a wonderful speaker. Also managed to snag a signed copy of the BFI’s new Cronos blu.

Took the nipper to see the 3D Billie Eilish film at the Odeon. Absolute SCENES when the whole cinema got up and danced down the front at the end!

I find myself in Richmond and its charmingly shabby Odeon for the only lunchtime showing in London of the new Iron Maiden doc. I am completely alone in the cinema.

The film is affable and full of fantastic archive footage but stumbles where others have before in failing to find a chink in tbe armour of an intensely private and professional band. If there is anything at all even remotely interesting about them as people or a unit, I don’t think we’re going to find out while they’re alive.

Of course, that doesn’t stop them being one of the very greatest bands ever and 90 minutes of cracking live footage is far from wasted time.

Look at this beautiful wee thing. An original unused set of transfers from a box of Shreddies in 1977!

Well, I turned 50 yesterday. This is a celebratory toilet roll which I received from my mother-in-law. Made it all worth it. FIFTY!
