Understanding Memorial Day, a Note from John's Dad

Our family has been traveling to Mansfield, Pennsylvania, for Memorial Day for 37 years. We go for a family reunion campout (not our family, but the Darts and Booths have embraced us as if we are family). It started as a weekend adventure with friends. It became something I didn't expect.

Mansfield is a small town in north central Pennsylvania. On Memorial Day morning, they hold a parade. They bring out the old fire truck, the Cub Scouts do their best to walk in a straight line and the high school marching band performs.

But there is something different.

The light poles lined with banners. Names and faces of the men and women who served.

On a wall on Main Street, there is a painted list of the names of the men who died fighting for their country.

These are people like Bruce, Larry, and their dad, Doug Dart. People from a small town who left family and friends to serve a cause greater than themselves to fight for people they would never meet, in places those people would never go.

When we first came to that parade, a white convertible carried three elderly women slowly down the street. They waved quietly. They were the Gold Star mothers. The mothers of soldiers who didn't come home.

I thought I understood Memorial Day before that moment.

I didn't.

Over the years, I watched that car carry fewer passengers. Until one year, none. Their sons long gone. Now the mothers are gone too.

But Mansfield still puts up the banners.

That's what Memorial Day is supposed to be. Yes, we’ll enjoy the long weekend. We’ll eat, drink, play wiffle ball, and talk all night.

But Memorial Day gives us a moment to stop and remember that people gave everything for us, and we owe them the dignity of not forgetting.

This Saturday, John and Mark are visiting Highland Chocolates in Wellsboro, PA. Highland chocolates make the most delicious candy, and they employ people with differing abilities. We'll be at their factory store from 10 am to 12 noon on Saturday, May 23.
