As many filmmakers know, trying to depict and tell the stories of how a project got made can seem stranger than fiction, or need a book, film, or a lecture to tell. For my first ever commercial, the tale of this project was certainly one of those wild cases.

“Madhouse” began as a discarded narrative from a music video I directed, which I later developed into a standalone piece. Creating it alongside two crew members and the star of the show reminded me once again that something beguiling and cinematic can emerge when a project is driven purely by care and determination.

BAKAR - BLEACH

From standing by the camera and its operator in Tokyo for hours — dodging heatstroke and avoiding overanalyzing existence — to a frantic guerrilla shoot racing through the city, where I kept repeating bizarre Japanese phrases such as “she’s a nice lawyer,” to then being back in London, staring into green in a calming studio, and then somehow switching into Hunter S. Thompson as a toddler, gallivanting through festivals, trying to capture the world’s whimsical characters. I must say, it sure was an experience.

JAXXON D. SILVA - CRACK IN THE MASK

After finishing my third short film, I decided to step into the caged jungle of music videos. Making this one felt like shaking hands with a mirror while your companion kept alternating between characters from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. From a civilized person’s perspective, we were just two loonies in a brick cell bickering over jester costumes. At long last, the video turned out just fine.

MAGDALENA SPINKA - SLOW DREAM

By chance, I came across this magical piece of music and was determined to create a video for it. It became a micro-budget masterclass, but through the perseverance and determination of the cast and our crew of five—who resembled a Dirk Diggler formation chemically fused within a Pacino character in a Lumet film—we managed to make it all happen.
