Woohooo! I shared A RIVER OF DUST with a LOT of kids last Friday!!! The San Francisco Public Library has posted the livestream of both the K-2 and 3-5th grade Kidquake presentations on YouTube! The K-2 was streamed with a live audience (but the audio only captures the speakers), and the 3-5th was recorded online via Zoom because the library closed the day of Diane Feinstein's funeral (which was just across the plaza at City Hall). Cheers to the awesome presenters I shared the stage with last Friday, @meera.sriram (A GARDEN IN MY HANDS) and @seinawedlick (NAMING CEREMONY)!!! Can you believe all three of us became engineers, and now we write books for kids?! Each of us had only 10 minutes to speak, so it was a race to pack in as much as we could, LOL. Please share with teachers and librarians who may want to play either the K-2 or 3-5 recordings for their classes! YouTube link for the K-2 presentation is in my linktree and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34bFIsSDwFE @pbspree @steamteambooks @chroniclekidsbooks @rellamermaid @bookishsteelfox @litquake @sfpubliclibrary #kidquake #picturebooks #kidlit #teachers #librarians #librariansofinstagram #teachersofinstagram

Just finished this fun and true! Story about Inky the octopus who escaped from a New Zealand aquarium. Told in rhyme and with engaging, Inky-personality-driven illustrations, it’s sure to be a crowd-pleaser! #kidlit #nonfiction #STEM #ocean

THE PEACH THIEF stole my heart. Scilla, a workhouse orphan in 1850s England longs for so much. To feel worthy. To taste a peach. To feel loved. Her longing is palpable and the barriers to satisfying those longings seem insurmountable, especially when those longings repeatedly give rise to missteps. There is so much heart here, I’m sorry the story had to come to an end. But Scilla lives on in my mind. And the science/art and gloriously sensual nature of gardening left a distinct impression as well. Highly recommended! #middlegrade #kidlit #historicalfiction #bookstagram

May 17 DEADLINE approaching!

If you (or anyone you know) are looking for a coming-of-age story where mother and daughter take the wrong paths in trying to mend their broken hearts. Where figuring out who you can trust is key. Where friends can be surprising lifesavers. Where being a whistle-blower might cause you to lose what you’ve always wanted. And where the local library houses an effusive golden retriever named Rory (who’s also a good listener), then I’m thinking this book’s for you!

Just finished this intense historical novel in verse about the rampant discrimination against Chinese immigrants in the late 1800s. I’ve written about the GoldRush and knew about the many ways Chinese immigrants were stripped of their land claims, murdered, and abused by the white population as early as 1849. This book shows how Eureka, CA and other towns/cities in California and further north burned down their Chinatowns and evicted all of their Chinese citizens. It also asks the question of why Chinese subgroups that originally formed to protect Chinese immigrants turned violently against each other. This story adds an important perspective, one that shines a spotlight on a subject long ignored in the standard U.S. history curriculum. #kidlit #middlegradebooks #history #teachers #librarians

Powerful and unsettling with a strong, cheeky female protagonist. This book sensitively deals with childhood sexual abuse. Depending on the maturity level of the reader, I'd suggest upper middle grade.

So AWEsome chatting with awe-thor @jilanne2694 about our new picture books, AWE! and THE OCEAN’S HEART! There are so many inroads to finding awe, in places and creatures big and small, in art, in nature…and especially in people!

What is awe, and how can it elevate a story?

In an increasingly tech-oriented world, why is awe an essential component of children's (and our) lives?

And maybe we'll even discuss how AWE beats AI....among other things....
