Today marks your second birthday without you. All these days later I can barely find the space in my brain to comprehend that you’re really gone. Your handwriting is still on the whiteboard in my kitchen. Many days I walk over to make sure no one has erased the last words you ever wrote to me, so unserious. Like you were coming right back. You should be here now. How I wish you were.
I miss how you’d show up unannounced, take extra loud phone calls and knock over everything in my kitchen. I miss how you’d call, “just to say I love you”. I miss thinking you knew everything when I was young. You were untamed, extraordinarily smart, a person of impeccable character, yet, not without flaws. You were real. You loved and were loved bigger and better than anyone I’ve known. You were my parachute, my lifeline, and it’s been nearly impossible to soldier on in your enormous absence. I do my best, but I’d do so much better if I still had you.
What I do know is I am forever blessed by vestiges of you. I’ll never have to wonder how it sounds when you say my name, because you narrated my whole childhood. Still love you, still miss you, still looking for you in every little thing. Happy birthday Dad 🪽🎈
