Wow — number one build of 2023 — we built this hallway set and separate air duct set outside DTLA at Avenida Studios. This was for this film You’re Not Supposed to be Here to help them film a gag where one character has to escape a locked sauna room through the air ducts. This was our biggest build of the year — custom textured walls, 3 standing sets, 7 hung doors in bullnosed door jambs, and two ceiling platforms to help with the stunts involved. Designed and lead by Emily Banks. Jacob Johanson, Marvin Hernandez, Angus Johnson, Ted Crunchy, Tom (jjdn), Sam (jngjn), Remzi Hazboun built this set. Jack Alving and lead Tammy Trinh made it all look amazing, and Joe “Charity” Cox made managing such a build possible.

This project comes in at number 2 mostly because of the crew involved. We had the “J Crew” helping out with project — Jacob Johanson, Jack Alving and Jared Lamont, with help from Tomas Gonzalez, designed and led by Delarey Wagner. We recreated the night club “Club Kulua” outside an apartment in DTLA. We built the backing to a large neon sign that we hung, transformed the doorway and installed a custom built canopy.

This build had to be in the top three. It was so much fun building this in Bennet’s backyard and studio, and I really like futuristic look made possible by Annie Becker’s dressing. This cubicle reminds me of one of my favorite science fiction movies — Brazil. The second best part of this build is how Bennet kept the cubicle as his personal work station, the best part was that this was for Bennet Coast, who is an equally amazing artist and friend. Bobby Sutton and Angus Johnson helped out with this project — designed, dressed and led by the talented Annie Becker.

With a day for prep, and almost a whole entire day installing in a backyard of a Mulholland Drive mansion, this set was shot for what seemed like five minutes and then quickly striked and packed up. The joke was that we spent more time taking pictures of ourselves on the set (which is always a must). Nonetheless I was really impressed with the final look of this set, and the effect the mirrored vinyl squares had visually. Much appreciated help from @sobbybutton , @e_money_art , the queen of vinyl @tammytrees , and designed and led by the lovely @elisecallan

First was building and standing an additional wall to the pre-existing cyclorama to the studio space — with help from @sobbybutton and @yackojack . @gussiesdreamcorner and I installed an angled monolith on top of a steel deck platform. The funnest part about this project was building scaffolding in the workspace for all of the scenic work we had to do finish these two 1’x1’x12’ faux steel beams that we installed on the Universal Studios back lot. Great build for the feature film Aftershock, designed by South African legend Delarey Wagner and help from @sobbybutton and @jackjohnjr
