It’s not everyday that you wake up an ICON. 😆 We are honoured to have received the Icon Award from @canadasbest100 . In May Bartender Atlas turns 10 years old and over the past decade we have done a lot of things all with the best interest of bartenders in mind. It sure feels good to be recognised for that. Thanks everyone! 🥰

New menu at @novacancyto has dropped and I am obsessed with this moody concoction by @liam_h_mck .

Last month (what is time?!) when I was in Vancouver for North America’s @50bestbars , I was hired to photograph a couple of different pop-ups. What is normal around events like NA50BB is for brands to host parties with guest bartenders and it’s a lot of fun. These events are primarily for industry folks and a lot of time is spent running around the city trying to get to as many as possible. This year there were A LOT of these pop-ups and it was, honestly, a bit overwhelming. With so many events and so much money put into them, I am curious if attendance was good at all of them and if they were all deemed a success. I have more thoughts on all of this but that is more for an in-person conversation.
One of the events that I was hired to photograph was the Campari Sugar Shack/Apres Ski Party that took place at Homer Street Cafe. I loved this event because it took place in the afternoon and because the guest bartenders were CANADIAN - the team for Raven Room in Whistler had one bar and the CANADYLANS (three Canadian bartenders named Dylan) had another. But what I loved most about this event was that it brought out people from the local community. This wasn’t just a cool guy industry event - it was something that the everyday person who loves a good time with good drinks came out to. The place was packed and I can confirm that everyone did indeed have a good time.

Dear bars & restaurants: invest in professional photography. Have your food and drink offerings captured as guests can expect them. Have your spaces and people properly documented. Celebrate all of the people who work at your establishment - not just the owners!
Doing so means: your social streams and website look incredible.
Doing so means: when that publication comes asking for images, you are ready for them!
Congrats to everyone who made this year’s @canadasbest100 Bars list! I love that so many of my images are gracing the pages (in addition to us winning the Icon Award via @bartenderatlas 🥰).

When I say this past year plus has been awful and challenging and all of the bad things, I truly mean it. We went through things that no one should, that I hope no one ever will have to. When you are in a constant state of flight for that long, it really does something to your body and mind.
When you are forever expecting a call and then it finally comes. When you are able to turn off your ringer for the first time in months. And even though it has not been 11 weeks since Deb passed away, it still doesn’t seem real. It still feels that we are in a state of flight. Just waiting for the next thing to go wrong. Grief comes in waves and it is just so awful.
Getting the chance to visit one of my most favourite cities, Barcelona, and then heading to Vancouver to celebrate with all our pals was a nice break. It was a needed break. A chance to be away and experience something else. Coming home is bittersweet because reality sets in again. She is no longer here. But we just keep going because what other choice do we have? Sending love and kindness to everyone who is dealing with something right now - which is really all of us. We are human.

Sometimes a bar creates a cocktail that then sticks around, for life. It becomes a timeless classic that will sit on every one of their menus going forward because the people love it so much.
The Cornichon at Bar Pompette is one of these said cocktails. I think if they took it off the menu, the people would stage a protest.

Obsessed with the colours in this scene.

One drink, three vibes.
Whenever I photograph drinks for bars and restaurants, I always try to give them as many options as possible of the same cocktail. This way, they are not using the same image over and over again to promote that best-selling drink. This way, too, their investment in me and professional photography has greater value.
