What an absolute pleasure to collaborate with the great team of @cameliadtla on this Shochu dinner. Everyone who knows me for 5 mins knows Shochu is my single favorite thing to drink, and introducing it to a curious table of Los Angelenos along with stellar food and truly considered Shochu cocktails was the highlight of my year so far. @cookingwithyuki prepared a playful but considered menu of very light riffs on classic Kyushu dishes. His only slightly elevated Buri Daikon was one of the best versions I’ve had of one of my favorite Japanese dishes. @bar.ransom had a very light touch with cocktails, not getting overly flashy to let the food and shochu shine. His Boilermaker of Maewari Mannenboshi Genshu with Suntory Malts was a simple, stellar highlight and shockingly good with Duck Gyoza. Thanks so much for having me 🙏

Holy sh*t you guys we did it. In all my rotations around the sun 2025 ranks at the top for turbulence and insane f*ckery. It’s been so hard and so weird. 明けましておめでとう!!!

A handful of nice moments from my last 365 days that I’d like to share:

1. @naordway took the most flattering photo of me in years
2. Blessed to work with folks like @matsuurashuzou
3. Introducing the world’s greatest sake bartender @engawa.yamanakaonsen to the wonders of Prince
4. and 5. The joy of connecting great people and great food: winemaker Jun Aruga @katsunumajozo_winery_official with god tier pizza (Sally’s New Haven) and distiller @tadashiyanagita with New Orleans cooking (Brenda’s Oakland).
6. @melissa_1220 made an honest man of @joel_shot , their alpine wedding in Kitzbuhel was a dream
7. Summer cookout queen @elechan
8. In the darkest days of March got to collectively scream about the world with Refused
9. A lifetime ago worked with @chef_yamada.isao and @louis_andia this year they opened their masterpiece of a restaurant @yamadanyc
10. Get to work almost everyday with the lightning bug of a human @loktagon 💪
11. Helped organize the Graves family reunion for Dad’s 90th bday
12. Holy sh*t Rule of Thirds is 5 years young! @geopad and @2le_jt it’s been a long journey from that counter at the Bowery Whole Foods. @bigkingsake celebrated by serving up fire, rice alcohol and a winning smile.
13. Family on Turkey Day
14. All that imbibing caught up with me resulting in one humbling photo …
15. After a lifetime of silent boycott I started lifting at the gym…
16. …and joined a political running group that has been a community building lifeline.
17. and 18. Got into the streets for the most exciting election of my life. Joy and energy of marathon day every day!
19. The annual NYE bash with @lagusta and @mcgregorphoto to start 2026 off right. 🔥 🔥 🔥 LFG…

2023 was a tough one, but in retrospect jam packed full of awesome people and places.
1) Blessed to start the year in Japan where I got to 2) make mochi for the first time in years and 3) visit a host great breweries but in the middle tore my left quad a bit and finished the trip on a cane. Rallied to go see 4) the new digs of @mrbenbell in Arkansas and got healthy for a summer trip 5) biking around the UK and Paris visiting cousins. 6) Japan came to us in September and introduced them to the joys of American dining 🦀. 7) So many dinners with friends like @snack_wizard_5000 and @withapower and 8) silly nights at @accidentalbarnyc. 9) @annietaylorr introduced me to the offbeat culinary wonders of Los Angeles. Just happy to be here, and psyched for a happy and healthy 2024 with you all.

After close to a year and a half of work the @shishinosato sake of @matsuurashuzou is finally here! Hannah Kirshner (@sweetsnbitters )wrote lovingly about this brewery in her book #WaterWoodAndWildThings and when we tasted they were as gorgeous, compelling and understated as she described. Matsuura-san insists this be enjoyed with food, so got a little prosciutto, Gouda and Brie to bring out the best in these four stunners. A little bottled joy from the other end of the world to close out summer…

2 plus years in the making! Finally got to host so many of my favorite Japanese craftspeople in the US and introduce them to the many folks on this side of the globe who revere their work. (Myself first among them!) Getting a final dinner with all of them at the legendary Chelsea Hotel in @elquijotenyc was the cherry on top.

Still reeling from the experience of running 26.2 miles through the city I love, the full spectrum of New York’s humanity on display in its brightest colors. The initial surge across the Verrazano bridge, a silent clear blue sky and Manhattan’s skyline to our left with nothing but footfalls and the wind in our ears. First pockets of spectators were in Bay Ridge: calling from overpasses, woops from families of all nations from their stoops, a pack of teenagers going wild. The first people to cheer us from the names on our shirts were a couple of parks department employees sweeping the side of the highway.
.
From there on it was a blur. Friends and family dotted throughout the millions cheering along the way. Aside from the official water stations people were handing out fruit, tissues, coca-cola, and occasionally beer and shots. Ridiculous signs saying how hot we were, complimenting our butts, asking for our numbers, calling us heroes. And my favorite “Worst Parade Ever.”
.
The music along the way was sheer nourishment. Rock cover bands, church choirs, taiko drummers. Soca, Salsa, Cumbia, Reggae, Dance, Pop, Hip-Hop, House, Disco, Metal blasting from sound systems large and small. The Boogie Down Bronx was one large block party, walls of speakers along the course pushing you forward.
.
Then back in Manhattan and the last few miles are brutal. Hobbling along without energy as thousands of people cheer you on to “keep going!”, and you want to tell them to “shut the hell up!”, you’re trying! In view of the finish line this guy Don walking next to me taps my shoulder and asks “we doing this?” and we sprinted the final stretch together. Then the comedown in the crowds and the chaos and you get a medal and you flee the upper west side and you realize. You were just in the greatest event in the greatest city in the world, and you survived. Not today Death, not today.
