My mom (center - top of the pyramid as my cousin says - always the "belle of the ball!") - Hasmig Melik-Keramian (RIP) with her siblings and friends during a costume ball in Baghdad in 1959; stories abound of that time. But...the US was the "greener pasture" as things began to change for the family in Iraq. Years later that tightknit Armenian family was driven to disparate parts of the country like so many immigrant families in the US - unwitting victims to the ideas of "success" but no less connected by love. Remember to love your family and chosen family as we struggle with the new realities of today - but don't forget there's strength in numbers. Mom's always relayed that message to me. Ice House Radio presents the second installment of: "Den Dana Night” - an all-vinyl celebration of world beat, disco and funk music from the SWANA regions!

On this night, we continue our collaboration with Austin-based DJ, performer and record collector DJ ZuZu @onebymetalllica - who teaches movement in Austin and will be blessing attendees with a live dance performance during the second set.

Joining her for that second set on the decks is Ice House Radio co-founder and core member of the Beirut Groove Collective @beirutgroovecollective - “Brother/Akhi” Jackson Allers @jacksonallers who also features rare records collected during the 16-years he lived in Lebanon and from years of collecting music he heard growing up in Houston going to Armenian and SWANA weddings and receptions.

The night of music and dance will start at 11pm and go until 1am at Ice House Radio HQ.

Think belly dance disco from the late 1970s and 1980s, Arabic pop from N. Africa, Arabic reggae from Libya, Armenian garage rock, and synthesizer music from Sudan.

Announcing the second edition of DAST DAR DAST (Hand in Hand), a sonic archival project debuting May 7 at the Los Angeles Art Book Fair (@printedmatter_artbookfairs)

Conceived in 2024, DAST DAR DAST is the culmination of a multi-year inquiry into the preservation of radical sound from the folk traditions of Iran and Afghanistan. Supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council (@bkartscouncil), the project underwent a rigorous period of research before its initial launch at the 2025 LAABF. The collection features a series of radical folk songs gathered from disparate sources, ranging from deep-web digital repositories to recovered private archives.

The title, DAST DAR DAST (دست در دست), captures the conceptual core of the project. Translating from Farsi as “hand in hand,” the phrase is rooted in the physical architecture of solidarity. It draws directly from the folk traditions of collective dance, where the interlocking of hands transforms individual movement into a singular, defiant body.

First editions are sold out. Physical copies of the second edition will be available exclusively at the fair and select local stockists in NYC. Digital downloads can be purchased via our website or Bandcamp.

Ice House Radio presents “Den Dana Night” an all-vinyl celebration of world beat, disco and funk music from the SWANA regions!

On this night, we start a new collaboration with Austin-based DJ, performer and record collector DJ ZuZu @onebymetalllica in her inaugural radio set on Ice House Radio! (She has an amazing residency at @lolo_wine on E. 6th St. in Austin and her records aren’t being played by anyone in the region!)

And joining her on the decks is Ice House Radio co-founder and core member of the Beirut Groove Collective @beirutgroovecollective - “Brother” Jackson Allers @jacksonallers who also features rare records collected during the 16-years he lived in Lebanon before making his way back Houston.

The night of music and dance will start at 11pm and go until 1am at Ice House Radio HQ. Appropriate mix drinks will be on hand and we’ll be serving local beer and wine all night long.

We’ll also welcome @bibbo.bellydance for a special belly dance performance on the heels of her recent trip to Egypt!

Last night I was able to do a creative chat with @stepafrika with @performingartshouston for their opening night of The Migration. A beautiful euphony of step, melody and repetition. Being a spectator to such boom and grove was sight, if their tickets left I hope you go see it. the way Jacob Lawrence’s vision collides with choreography was definitely something worth seeing.

I help curate the environment for two locations for @pecanprojectofficial and @media.2070 . I didn’t know I was capable to do such work.With the collaboration between Mr.Jacq @jacquashouston @dalyahjones and @_dime.peace it was a truly beautiful thing we did. To being in the rural and having thriving conversations. Having some of the most delicious brisket of my life. Doing my first digital set (I’m so analog) thank you @jacksonallers for teaching me! Visions of black people on horses, hearing the joy and laughter of children. Being apart of learning and seeing some grounding. I thank you for trusting me.

I don’t know how I find myself in these situations but thank you for community for pushing this shy girl to things they probably wouldn’t go for.
