Celebrating our roots through the harvests of our labor, cultivating a sense of belonging and creating local, sustainable, cultural, nutritious food systems.
I woke up reminiscing about my church’s Neighborhood Fest on Saturday, September 7th where I shared herbs, fruits and vegetables from the garden myself and @nehemoyia started at Bethany Baptist Church in Bedford Stuyvesant @bethanybrooklyn. It’s so important for churches to expand their ministries to the land and to the streets where people need us the most.
It was such a pleasure to share, teach and empower the community to try something new and to see how many people were excited and shocked about all the Callaloo growing in Bed Stuy! 😍🌱💚

When your fren has a farm next door to yours and your cousin funds farms and all your farm friends roadtrip to Argyle, NY for a workday!
Working alongside other Black growers on the land feels like a dream, like sovereignty personified, growing something rooted in us, for us. Shoutout to Ashanti Williams Founder of @theblackyardfarm andmy cousin Olivia Watkins, Founder of @blackfarmerfund for this wonderful event.
Laying with nature processing processed foods, noticing how nutritional value is so far removed from the process due to profit that it no longer feels like part of the process of eating and asking at what point did our health stop being part of the process?
The Truth: Most foods are processed in some way but not all foods are processed heavily or artificially so read your labels, buy local and stay curious.

🍃Just in time for Earth month, join us Tuesday, April 21, for a free community film screening of the highly-acclaimed documentary SEEDS, a portrait of centennial farmers in the geographical south, directed by Brittany Shyne. Using lyrical black and white imagery, this meditative film examines the decline of generational black farmers and the significance of owning land.
Before this special screening, MoCADA will also preview an excerpt from Copper Boyz, Collin Riggins'riveting full-length documentary about a group of cowboys who ride around Kansas City, engaging with community members and introducing youth to horsemanship. Guided by an ethos of violence prevention, they fundamentally reimagine what it means to be a cowboy and steward and, in turn, invite us to do the same.
The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion on the generative practices of land ownership, stewardship, and cultivation, and more . Panelists include Sabrina Schmidt Gordon (Producer, SEEDS) and Collin Riggins (Director, Copper Boyz) in conversation with DeVonne Jackson Perez.
** Bonus: Event attendees will receive complementary bags of fresh food from our partners, Brooklyn Supported Agriculture (@brooklynsupportedagriculture), a Black-led Worker-Owned. Farmer-Focused community supported agriculture collective. Food bags will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last.
WHAT: Film Screening | SEEDS + a preview of Copper Boyz, followed by a panel discussion
WHEN: Tuesday, April 21 @ 6:45 pm - 10:00 pm
WHERE: MoCADA Culture Lab II, 10 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, 11217
RSVP link in bio!
This film screening was made possible thanks to generous support from the Brooklyn Supported Agriculture and NYC Coalition for Theaters of Color in partnership with NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (@NYCulture) and NYC Council.

Last month, our Director of Community Partnerships, DeVonne was awarded the Black Solidarity Economy Immersion Scholarship @neweconomycoalition to attend @collectivediaspora Chocolate, Cooperatives + Culture trip to Trinidad.
Alongside fellow cooperative leaders and nonprofit organizers, led by Gillian Goddard of The Alliance of Rural Communities of Trinidad & Tobago and Chocolate Rebellion @thenewruraltt, they connected with cocoa farmers, local cooperatives and explored the heritage and production of Trinidad which was once the third-largest cocoa producer in the world.
From the Trinitario fruit, to cocoa tea, to the final chocolate bar and all the deliciousness in between, it’s important to Brooklyn Supported Agriculture to support the local/ native systems of farmers and producers across the global south and to develop those relationships to deepen collective resilience.

Food Regulator Agencies… who are they? What do they do?! And why are there so many?
Here is a small list of theses agencies to help you grasp understand but it raises bigger questions for me…
Who are these food agencies really working for, consumers or corporations? Who decides what quality food is? Andwhy are harmful ingredients allowed in our food until proven dangerous, instead of the other way around?
I’m not just here to tell you what’s in your food and who governs it… but I’m here to ask why the system looks like this in the first place
