Today feels strange.

The world calls it my birthday, but all I can think about is the woman who gave me life no longer being here to witness it.

For the first time, I am celebrating the day I was born without the heartbeat that carried me before I ever took my first breath.

And maybe that is the cruelest part of grief life keeps moving even when a part of your soul stays stuck in the moment you lost them.

I cannot call this a happy birthday.
Not when the voice that once prayed for me, comforted me, and loved me unconditionally is no longer here for me to hear.

But even through this pain, I still feel you.

In the way I speak with kindness.
In the way I try to love people.
In the way I refuse to give up no matter how heavy life becomes.

You are still here, Mom.
In every lesson you taught me, every sacrifice you made, and every prayer you whispered over my life.

And God knows I wish I had more time with you.
Long enough for you to see the man I’m becoming.
Long enough for you to meet your future grandchildren like I always promised you.

I pray you know how deeply your son misses you.
I pray you know I’m still trying my best to become a man that would make you proud.

So today, as I grow older without you beside me, I make you this promise:
