We’re alarmed by a newly released US government memo, claiming sweeping authority to arrest and detain refugees who have lived in the country for at least a year, but have not yet been granted, lawful permanent residency. Refugees arrive only after completing the most rigorous security vetting the government conducts for travelers to the United States. Admitted refugees come with the understanding that once here, they can begin healing working and contributing to their new communities. Detaining them after admission and resettlement without cause and without regard for the trauma, they have already endured, undermines the US commitment to protect refugees embodied by the US Refugee Admissions Program. The IRC calls on the administration to immediately halt the rollout of this policy and unnecessary revetting efforts.

In Denver, and across the nation the IRC is deeply disappointed by the historically low refugee resettlement ceiling for fiscal year 2026. Only 7,500 resettlement slots will be made available, “primarily” allocated to Afrikaners from South Africa.

For 45 years, the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program has stood as a beacon of hope and a testament to American leadership and humanitarian values.

This year’s resettlement levels should extend America’s offer of safety to those refugees who are most at-risk, including more than 100,000 who have passed all vetting and are waiting patiently in line. If not, the refugee admissions cap that has been announced for 2026 will leave families separated and vulnerable individuals stranded.

We are urging the administration to reassess and reconsider this decision.

Today on #CitizenshipDay2025 we recognize that naturalization is more than a status change; it is a declaration of belonging. It ensures that our communities are not just spoken about, but are the ones speaking, deciding, and shaping the future. The IRC in Denver is proud to join @npnewamericans on this national day of action as we stand united to #ProtectCitizenship and support community members on their journey to naturalization.

In this moment, we face a new and profound chapter of uncertainty. Resettlement policies are shifting, refugees’ lives are being upended as humanitarian programs shutter, and displacement is at an all-time high, leaving millions in limbo. At a time like this, we must ask: What would we have lost if communities hadn’t met the moment—if they hadn't given refugees the chance to build new lives and enrich the places they now call home?

It is time—more than ever—to rise up with courage and determination with refugees. Join us in standing with refugees around the world and share this graphic today.
