We are still coming to terms with the loss of our friend and community member Cris Derksen. This is a staggering loss for the Indigenous community, and the broader music and film communities where they were a beloved creative leader and collaborator. One of Cris's recent projects was the original score for the feature film AKI, directed by Darlene Naponse which premiered at last year's TIFF. Cris was so excited about this project, which tells the story of Darlene's community Atikameksheng Anishnawbek through music and moving images. The music they created is a gift to the community and the land, and an example of the fierce generosity and breathtaking talent Cris brought to all of their work. For those of us who had the good fortune to know Cris we are grateful to have been touched by their brilliance and beautiful spirit. ❤️

Join us at Cannes and @marchedufilm for impACT | Arctic Storytelling and the New World Order | A Panel Presented by International Sámi Film Institute & Indigenous Screen Office.

What happens when Arctic nations collaborate directly across borders, languages, and colonial histories to build a shared screen ecosystem? Which new narratives emerge when the Arctic is not a backdrop, but a point of view? And, how can Indigenous cinema support larger political movements? Through the lens of Indigenous cinema, these representatives and institutions will highlight how Indigenous organisations are • Reframing the Arctic from object to author • Building circumpolar creative alliances • Asserting narrative sovereignty alongside political sovereignty • Positioning the North as a global force in storytelling, not a niche

🗓 May 14, 11:30–12:30
📍 Palais Stage (Palais -1) & Online

A conversation with Anne Lajla Utsi (ISFI), Kerry Swanson (ISO), Jason Ryle (AIFF), Emile Hertling Péronard (Ánorâk Film). Moderated by Melanie Nepinak Hadley (ISO).

Come and listen and connect with us at Marché du Film! 💫
