I have walked down this stretch of the Mall Road countless times. Going home from college, on my way to the fortress stadium to work nights with Rafiq Bhai constructing stalls and floats for the cultural show at the Fortress stadium, on my way to Urdu Science Board to drop off cover illustrations and pickup next assignments, walking with the late Wasim Mufti in search of soundtracks for our next production for the Mime Club, on our way to attend the funeral of Saeed’s father, going home to Model Town with Nausheen, sometimes all the way to Township on my own. Last night I walked down this stretch after attending the tribute concert for our recently departed dear friend Haniya Aslam. Lahore has changed beyond recognition, but this stretch, with its quiet service lane running along the busy Mall, with these old trees, our quiet and wise elders, arching over it, as if shielding it from the noisy river of life running alongside it, is the same as it always was. Or is it.
