I can hardly begin to express my gratitude to those who made my exhibition launch at @myartmuseum_official so special. Drawing is a slow, quiet, and solitary endeavour, and that isolation often breeds self-doubt. However, getting to travel to the other side of the world to spend time with incredible people makes it all worthwhile, and has left me feeling excited about making work in a way I haven’t for a very long time.
While there are too many people to thank, I owe a particular debt of gratitude to MAMU’s director @taegeunyi, @tina_han_art and her wonderful curatorial team, and everyone else at the museum who worked on this exhibition. It’s been the highlight of my career.
“Memory Cabinet” continues at MAMU through March of 2024. I hope you’ll be able to make it, and I hope to be back in Korea very soon.

I’m really happy to be featured in the new @gestalten book “This Is Where We Live”, alongside some friends and other incredible illustrators working today. A huge thanks to editor Antonis Antoniou for including me! #ilyamilstein

An illustration for @tmagazine’s current features on gardens, in which I celebrate the role insects play in the propagation of plants by taking some imagery from Jan van Kessel the Elder’s work. A big thanks to AD Jamie Sims as always. #ilyamilstein

Illustrations accompanying @tmagazine’s “How to Start a Garden”. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, in large part because I’ve been focused on a major project that you’ll learn about soon, but I couldn’t think of a better way to break this dry spell than with this little portrait of my wife @gabi_lamontagne, who took the toxic dirt patch in front of our Brooklyn home and turned it into a healthy and thriving garden of native flowers. As always, a big thanks to AD Jamie Sims for the fun assignment and to @jonathanaeden for his animation! #ilyamilstein

Illustrations accompanying @tmagazine’s “Want to Buy a Work of Art at Auction? Here’s What to Know”. While I’m not the intended demographic for this article, I’ve been surprised to learn over the past few years that auctions *can* be a thrifty way of collecting nice things, e.g. durable handmade antique furniture routinely sells at auction for a fraction of the price of a similar eBay listing or even a contemporary machine-made counterpart. Anyway, do with that information what you will. A big thanks to AD Jamie Sims for the fun assignment and to @jonathanaeden for his animation! #ilyamilstein

I worked on a dream project under the design direction of @gabi_lamontagne as part of her branding for @lapizza.nyc; a small Roman-style pizzeria in Manhattan’s Flatiron district! Providing an illustration for a pizza box was the fulfilment of a longtime ambition, and I’m thrilled to have done it in the city where I live with my favourite designer. A huge thanks to Gabi for the fun project, mangia bene vivi felice! #ilyamilstein

I’m humbled to share this tote bag I drew for @strandbookstore, a project with some personal meaning. When I visited New York for the first time few things had a bigger impact on me than my multiple lengthy visits to The Strand, the sprawling independent vendor of new and used books founded in 1927. As a shy 13-year-old book nerd it felt close to heaven, and it loomed large in my imagination in the years that followed, ultimately becoming a major factor in my desire to move to this city. As a less shy 35-year-old book nerd living in New York, I’m delighted to have played with The Strand’s iconography with this little scene of their store, available as a four-color screenprinted heavyweight canvas tote from both their East Village store and online shop (link in bio). This is a strange world but there are many things that keep it special, so if you can, try to support independent booksellers. #ilyamilstein

A series of illustrations for @newyorkermag and @explorecharleston! The city of Charleston presented this past weekend’s @newyorkerfest, and was the subject of these illustrations which were used as the basis for animations, publicity, tote bags, and so on at the festival. A big thanks to Macy Sirmans, Ally McBeal, and the rest of the team at Condé Nast for the fun project. #ilyamilstein
