💫Each year, the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination, together with the SNF Public Humanities Initiative and the Benaki Museum @thebenakimuseum , gathers in Kardamyli at the home of Patrick Leigh Fermor in the Peloponnese. 🌱

Fellows of the Institute, PHI awardees, and invited guests come together to collaborate, exchange ideas, and reflect on a shared theme. Our fourth annual Kardamyli workshop took place in May 2026 and explored the theme: “The Book.” 📚

This year, the creative duo behind “These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Things,” curators of the Athens Zine Bibliotheque @theathenszinebibliotheque — an Athens-based library of zines and small editions from around the world — joined the workshop.

A heartfelt thank you to all our guests, and of course to the Benaki Museum for being our partners in this beautiful yearly adventure. See you next year!

🎶 BONES, ROCKS AND JACKHAMMERS

A Portrait Concert by our current Fellow and composer Finola Merivale @finolamerivale at Reid Hall, Paris.

From New York to Paris to the wild coastline of the West of Ireland, “Bones, Rocks and Jackhammers” reflected on place, nature, and the environment through a powerful collection of solo works with electronics. Named one of the “23 composers to watch in 2023” by The Washington Post, Finola Merivale embraces microtonality, improvisation, and multi-tracking to create immersive sonic landscapes shaped by memory, climate, and imagined worlds.

This portrait concert celebrated the launch of "Abhaile", the Irish word for “home” recorded with Merivale’s close collaborator and saxophonist @sikoracat The evening also featured violinist @mayabennardo and the premiere of a new music video by Institute Fellow @nina_berman for the piece "Closing Doors."

The concert was preceded by a conversation between Finola Merivale and pianist and Columbia University faculty member @maguchannyc both Fellows at the Institute this year.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this extraordinary evening of contemporary music and artistic collaboration. ✨🎷🎻🌊

This event was organized by the @iii_snfphi with the generous support of the @cgcparis , @fedoraplatform , @cultureireland , @centreculturelirlandais and the @irishembassyfrance .

📚 One of the most influential figures in the American conversation shares the story of how her life gave birth to critical race theory and intersectionality.

📍 Reid Hall, 4 rue de Chevreuse (Paris 75006)
ℹ️ Free + Open to all
📆 June 10 at 7 p.m.

It is not very often that someone comes along and permanently reshapes the way Americans think about two of the most important issues of the day. In this case: race and gender. But that is what Kimberle Crenshaw did when she articulated two concepts that would forever change national and global debates about equality: intersectionality and critical race theory.

She will be in conversation with Keithley Woolward, associate director of the Columbia M.A. in History and Literature.

🔗 Register at the link in bio.

Backtalker (Simon & Schuster, 2026) is the powerful and intimate story of how a little girl from Canton, Ohio, came up with a new way to look at the world. Crenshaw’s memoir traces the way her lived experience made her see things others didn’t as the daughter of a strong-minded teacher and a pathbreaking public servant, and as the sister of a protective, yet bullying older brother. She starts to talk back, and that backtalking has continued throughout her life.

It happens when she is denied a role in the kindergarten school play. When she is escorted to the back door of a private club. When Anita Hill is exiled for testifying against Clarence Thomas. When OJ Simpson goes on trial. When Obama launches My Brother’s Keeper, a movement focused on boys of color only. When the movement against police violence overlooks Black women. Crenshaw is there for all of it.

Kimberlé Crenshaw is the Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law at Columbia University. She is also a Distinguished Professor of Law and the Promise Institute Chair in Human Rights at the University of California, Los Angeles - School of Law and the co-founder and executive director of The African American Policy Forum. She was a 2022-2023 Reid Hall Faculty Visitor.

ON WAR 📚 Book Launch

On April 16, we welcomed philosophers Étienne Balibar, Alex Taek-Gwang Lee, and former Fellow Jana Ndiaye Berankova for a conversation reflecting on war, crisis, and the political challenges shaping our present moment. 👏🏼👏🏼

The event celebrated the publication of Étienne Balibar’s "Sur la guerre", the inaugural volume in Suture Press’s new series of small theory books, published in English and French and accompanied by illustrations by Nela Klímová. The book brings together three essays examining the notion of war — from Simone Weil’s reading of Homer’s Iliad to the connections between Carl von Clausewitz and Karl Marx, as well as reflections on today’s geopolitical landscape and the war in Ukraine.

This event was organized by the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination @iii_snfphi and Suture Press @suturepress , with the support of the Institute of Philosophy of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Culture Moves Europe program of the European Union.

This work was produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.

🗣 On April 9, we were honored to close the SNF Rendez-Vous de l’Institut of the academic year with our dear Fellow, filmmaker and artist Maryam Tafakory @maryamtafakory

Through a performative iteration of her research-based project, Maryam Tafakory shared archival documents, including declassified files from the final years of imperial Iran and the early post-revolution period, offering powerful glimpses into the role of women within a popular leftist movement that was suppressed on all fronts.

🎞 Born and raised in Iran, Maryam Tafakory works across film and performance. During the evening, audiences discovered the depth of her artistic and research practice, shaped by themes of memory, censorship, gender, and political history.

👏 We warmly thank Maryam Tafakory for this amazing presentation, and all those who joined us at Reid Hall for all the SNF Rendez-Vous de l’Institut of the academic year.

✨ The Rendez-Vous de l’Institut series is generously supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. Thank you for your continued support!

🎙 This event was recorded and may be broadcast as part of our SNF Rendez-vous de l’Institut podcast series.

🎙️On February 19, 2026, the Institute for Ideas and Imagination had the pleasure of welcoming acclaimed soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan @hannigan.barbara to Reid Hall to deliver the fourth annual Sidney N. Zubrow Memorial Lecture. In the Grande Salle Ginsberg-LeClerc, Hannigan presented Resonance, Flow and Surrender in the Creative Process, offering an in-depth reflection on artistic collaboration and the creative journey behind new music for the operatic and concert stage.

Her presentation was followed by a discussion with Nicholas Spice, fiction writer, critic, and consulting publisher to the London Review of Books.

The Institute is deeply grateful to Edward, Betsy, and Daniel Cohen for making this lecture possible.
