The Portland metro area has long been a hotbed for comic book and tabletop gaming fans; comic book and game shops are common, and one of the comic industry’s major publishers, Dark Horse Comics, is headquartered in Milwaukie. Now, the Hillsboro area is getting its own comic-centered convention.

The inaugural Westside Comic Con is coming to the Wingspan Event & Conference Center, May 23-24, 2026. This inclusive, community-focused event is dedicated to celebrating and promoting the cultural and economic impact of comics, graphic novels, gaming and popular arts.

Every glass of wine tells a story, and these winemakers are creating their own unique and exciting tales. Meet some of the women who are bringing their winemaking skills to Tualatin Valley’s vineyards and wineries.

The sign that stretches across Grants Pass’ main street reads: “It’s the climate.”

It’s a bold statement, but the warm, temperate climate makes the town a perfect hub for the wealth of activities the Rogue Valley has to offer — and makes the region ideal for growing grapes.

From mountain biking and hiking to jetboat touring and wine tasting, here is your guide to a perfect weekend in southern Oregon’s premier town; link in bio.

Tucked along the banks of the Nehalem River in the small town of Wheeler, Neah-Kah-Nie Smokehouse sits in a modest, reclaimed building that was, fittingly, once used for the same purpose decades ago. When owner Teresa Merlos first stepped inside, she learned that in the 1940s, oysters and mussels were shucked right out back and fish was smoked on-site. It felt less like starting something new and more like continuing a story already in motion.

That sense of continuity runs through everything here at the Neah-Kah-Nie Smokehouse that Teresa and Mike Merlos opened three years ago. It also accounts for the warm reception from Wheeler residents, who welcomed the chance to buy local food without leaving town.

Smith Rock State Park comes alive in spring.

With a fresh Oregon State Parks annual pass in the glovebox, we headed east from the Oregon coast through the forested mountains of the Santiam Wilderness and into the high desert of central Oregon. We arrived just as the late March sun began to slip behind the canyon walls, casting long shadows across the jagged rock formations. Swarms of swallows dipped and dove over the Crooked River gobbling up the bugs that emerged at dusk.

It was our first glimpse of Smith Rock State Park, and it was enough to understand why people travel from far and wide to experience it.

L’Orange, the wine-focused Southeast Portland bistro named one of the city’s best new restaurants in 2023, now has a nearby sister bar focused on sparkling wine and grilled cheese.

@buvonspdx , which opened quietly in March, specializes in sparkling wine, with a list of bottles selected by L’Orange owned Jeff Vejr ranging from Austria to Oregon, plus glass pours of “real Champagne” ($30-$44) kept fresh using a Perlage Wine System.

With warmer weather finally permeating Portland’s perpetually overcast skies, there’s no better time for a frozen sweet treat. Long known as an ice cream hotspot, Portland is now embracing a new contender in the frozen treat world: bingsu, or bingsoo.

The Korean shaved milk dessert, known for its snowlike texture, is popping up across the metro area. Since last summer alone, three new bingsu destinations spots have opened, making the photogenic treat more accessible than ever.

When Aaron Wessling moved to Portland from Florida in 2011, he wasn’t sure if he’d made the right choice.

“The first year was a very lonely year in Portland,” Wessling said last week, during a walk around Mount Tabor Park. “I would sit up there and look out over the city and was like, ‘I’m a long way from home. Is this the right decision?’”

Not long after, he met his now-wife, and they would come up to Mount Tabor together. When they got married, it was at the park’s summit.

So, while Wessling has created several rephotography studies of places around Portland, Tabor is where the project of taking the same photo over and over again is most personal to him.
