Florida’s HATEPLOW formed in 1993 as an outlet for Malevolent Creation guitarists Phil Fasciana and Rob Barrett to unleash some extra deathgrinding fury. They were joined by Revenant bassist Tim Scott, Sickness vocalist Kyle Symons, and drummer Larry Hawke. This lineup recorded a demo in 1996 before delivering the 1998 debut Everybody Dies, a 14-song barrage of crude, unapologetic deathgrind that charged through the late ’90s underground with fast, faster, and even faster brutality. Channeling the spirit of Terrorizer while carrying traces of Malevolent Creation’s mid to late ’90s heaviness, the album became a throttling snapshot of American death metal’s most unfiltered era.

Tragically, Hawke died of smoke inhalation while saving his pet from a house fire before the album was released. Honoring their fallen drummer, the band pushed forward and returned in 2000 with The Only Law is Survival, featuring bassist Doug Humlack and drum powerhouse Dave Culross. Even more direct and relentless, the 13-song album sharpened the band’s ferocity with nonstop blastbeats, crushing breakdowns, and a ruthless lyrical outlook, cementing HATEPLOW as diehards who never compromised.

Originally formed in 1977, Cleveland’s BLACK DEATH are largely known as the very first all–African-American heavy metal band. After a trio of demos in the early ’80s, the band released their self-titled debut album in 1984, a crucial piece in the history of Cleveland heavy metal and a cult classic of raw ‘n’ wild HEAVY FUCKING METAL with a thirst for the epic and dramatic.

Imagine Judas Priest’s Sad Wings of Destiny boosted with an OTT meanness, or Cirith Ungol as punks leaning harder into Thin Lizzy’s melodic tendencies, truly an awesome and awe-inspiring statement. Their breakup four years later made BLACK DEATH all the more singular.

HELLS HEADBANGERS, with the help of Auburn Records’ Bill Peters, reissued the band’s debut in 2017 across vinyl (plus bonus 7”), CD, and cassette, making it widely available again.
Renewing their blood pact, BLACK DEATH return to HELLS HEADBANGERS for the long-awaited second album, Breaking the Chains of Hell.

Led by Siki Spacek on vocals and guitar, the album hearkens back to the band’s original era before Black Death Resurrected (2014), balancing barbaric heaviness with dramatic, vintage songwriting, stomping headbangers, chugging strutters, and moments of smooth, sinister class.

As Siki explains, the album’s material spans multiple BLACK DEATH eras, including unreleased recordings and lineup shifts during the 2020 quarantine period.

Ultimately, Breaking the Chains of Hell is 46 minutes of heavy metal mayhem, bridging old and new, classic and contemporary, under a banner of pure American steel.
