“We won’t die secret deaths anymore. The world only spins forward.”

As people gather in Central Park today for the annual AIDS Walk New York, we’re thinking about this scene from “Angels in America” — Tony Kushner’s landmark play about the AIDS crisis and survival. Its final scene at the Bethesda Fountain closes with the now-famous call for “more life” — and for the great work to begin.

Kushner was kind enough to read from his work during an interview at the @heckschermuseum for an upcoming #TreasuresOfNewYork project.

Just Powers: Long Island Biennial 2026 opens to the public tomorrow May 16 at 12 pm!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Tonight we will be celebrating with an exclusive opening reception for exhibiting artists, members, donors, and special guests! Congratulations to all of this year’s exhibiting artists! 🙌🙌

The Long Island Biennial, now in its ninth iteration, deepens connections between artists across Nassau and Suffolk counties and their communities. The exhibition uses the Declaration of Independence (1776) and George Grosz’s masterpiece of political art, Eclipse of the Sun (1926), as touchstones for thinking about power, national ideals, and public life. The Declaration of Independence set forth aspirational principles of liberty and equality, although its promises remain incomplete. A century and a half later, George Grosz’s searing painting exposed the corruption he saw at the heart of modern society.

From an open call that attracted nearly six hundred submissions, the guest jurors selected 73 works by 69 artists that respond to these cultural and political legacies. Just Powers brings together the work of Long Island artists with diverse perspectives to reveal how democratic ideals are interpreted, challenged, and reimagined today. The exhibition will be on view through September 13.

Just Powers was juried by Tripoli Patterson, founder and owner, Tripoli Gallery; photographer Andreas Rentsch, Associate Professor of Photography and Chair of the Art Department, Lycoming College; and Dr. Lauren Rosati, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was curated by Dr. Meredith A. Brown, Consulting Curator of Contemporary Art, The Heckscher Museum of Art.

Public funding provided by Suffolk County.

Thank you to everyone who attended a very successful “We The People…” A Conversation About Art & Democracy in collaboration with the Huntington Historical Society @huntingtonhistoricalsociety !!

Inspired by the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, attendees enjoyed delicious food, conversation, and connection at this Democracy Dinner. The evening featured catering by Gingerbites @gingerbites_ , a local restaurant serving Haitian cuisine rooted in rich cultural traditions. With Haitian Flag Day (May 18) in just several days, the menu offered a meaningful connection to themes of unity, resistance, and pride, highlighting how culture and shared experience can bring people together and deepen conversations around inclusion and belonging.

Artists from the Museum’s Just Powers: Long Island Biennial 2026 exhibition joined as special guests, helping to spark conversation at each table, as they shared how these ideas shape their work and creative practices, and invited attendees to offer their own unique perspectives regarding the intersection of art and civic life.
