“Ánh’s New Word” by Hanh Bui has already found a permanent place in our home library. 📚✨

This tender story follows Ánh, a child in a Vietnamese refugee camp, who simply wants to say “thank you” to her teacher but the words keep getting stuck between her heart and her voice.

As a Vietnamese/Asian American family, this one hits different. So many of us know what it feels like to carry words you don’t yet have the courage to say. To be seen but not heard. To be brave in silence.

Hanh Bui wrote this as the book she wished she had as a refugee child, and you can feel that love on every single page. The illustrations by Bao Luu are warm and full of feeling, and the story reminds us that one small word, spoken at the right moment, can change everything.

If you’re looking for a book that teaches courage, honors immigrant roots and opens hearts, this is one I truly recommend adding to your home library. 🌸

Just ask the 2nd graders at Fairfax County's Hutchison ES who met author Hanh Bui and listened as she read "Ánh's New Word" -- the story of an eight-year-old Vietnamese refugee who learns her very first English word. Thanks to the RIF NOVA Authors in Our Schools program, each child received an autographed book to take home to keep -- with handwritten notes of encouragement in each book from Mrs. Bui. Something amazing happened when picture book author @hbui333 put a copy of ONE CAN BE in a @littlefreelibrary in Fairfax, Virginia.

As Hanh texted me:

“A father was there with his two daughters. The girls couldn’t wait for me to take the photo so they could have your book. The father said when they were done reading it, they’d bring it back for more kids to enjoy.

It was really touching hearing the little girls squealing in delight and speaking Spanish. I overheard the father say the little girl in the art is so cute. Love when kids can see themselves represented.

Your book was only in the LFL for less than five minutes! It will be loved over and over again.”

Hanh has two picture books out and more on the way. Her work is often inspired by her childhood experiences in a refugee camp, learning a new language and family love.

ONE CAN BE has now been in 27 states. 23 to go!

Something amazing happened when picture book author @hbui333 put a copy of ONE CAN BE in a @littlefreelibrary in Fairfax, Virginia.

As Hanh texted me:

“A father was there with his two daughters. The girls couldn’t wait for me to take the photo so they could have your book. The father said when they were done reading it, they’d bring it back for more kids to enjoy.

It was really touching hearing the little girls squealing in delight and speaking Spanish. I overheard the father say the little girl in the art is so cute. Love when kids can see themselves represented.

Your book was only in the LFL for less than five minutes! It will be loved over and over again.”
