EPISODE 6: BROKEN BRITAIN

Vape shops. Betting shops. Fried chicken. American candy shops nobody ever visits but somehow stay open forever.

This isn’t a coincidence. The tax system literally rewards small-footprint, low-employment, low-margin businesses, and punishes the ones doing the opposite.

Independent gyms have the wrong shape for this system. We need bigger spaces. We employ coaches, not just a single cashier. We operate on tighter margins. We’re community infrastructure, not impulse purchase.

And we get hit hardest.

Coaches losing jobs. Community programmes being cut. Independent gyms closing. All at the moment the Government says it wants the NHS to shift from sickness to prevention.

The tax system is closing down the businesses delivering prevention.

FITTEST IN DUBAI: The city’s fittest showed up to throwdown last weekend 💥

@athletefitness.ae vs @sk_fitness_dubai: after an intense battle, Athlete Fitness took the overall win 🏆
But it was close all weekend...

SK Fitness Dubai dominated the mixed pairs, while Athlete Fitness secured the top spots in both the female and male pairs.

To crown the Fittest Gym, teams were ranked within their division using a relative performance score, then averaged across Male, Female and Mixed divisions to determine the overall winner. Depth mattered. Consistency mattered. And Athlete Fitness earned it 💪

Unreal performances. Big energy. Serious competition.

Today I went on BBC Politics Live to make the case for thousands of independent gyms across the country.

The Government says it wants to shift the NHS from sickness to prevention. The tax system is closing down the businesses that already deliver it.

Across 33 independent UK gyms in our survey, business rates have risen 265% in two years. Coaches losing jobs. Community programmes being cancelled. Gyms shutting their doors. All at the moment the country needs them most.

Independent gyms are not luxury businesses. They are frontline public health infrastructure. The tax system needs to recognise that.

This is just the beginning.
