“Yesterday we lost a titan of Southern soul, the one of a kind, Clarence Carter. I’m not going to go into his discography, but I do have a couple personal stories.
Clarence was born in Montgomery, AL. Since 1985, I’ve worked every Alabama Music Hall of Fame Induction Banquet as a volunteer. In 1993, they made me the official “Celebrity Escort”, which meant I was responsible for retrieving anyone who had to be on stage from their table, making sure they got on stage in time. I had the pleasure of escorting Clarence on several occasions. He was always extremely kind.
One year I brought the “This Is Clarence Carter” album to get his producer Rick Hall to sign. I had no intention of asking Clarence to sign it. He’s blind! Backstage his girlfriend saw me with and asked if I was going to get him to sign it. I just went “He signs?”. She said, “Oh yeah!”, grabbed it, sat down next to him and said “I have Jay with me and he has an album for you to autograph.” She took the Sharpie, put his hand on top of hers and signed it. I’ve also seen the Blind Boys of Alabama sign the same way.
Rick Hall passed on January 2, 2018. One month later, Clarence paid tribute to Rick, performing at that year’s AMFOF Banquet. When I got him backstage, he needed to go to the bathroom. His girlfriend couldn’t take him because there was no private backstage bathroom, so it was up to me to take him to the main restroom. There were 3 urinals, with the middle one open. I centered him and told him it was 3 steps in front of him. You should’ve seen the looks on the guys next to him when they realized they were peeing next to Clarence Carter!!!
I’ve DJ’ed at everyone of Jason Isbell’s Shoalsfest’s, focusing on music recorded in the Muscle Shoals area. I start when they open the gates until the first act plays. I haven’t decided whether it’ll be Saturday or Sunday this year, but I guarantee you, one of those days will be dedicated to Clarence Carter…” Jay
