Sadly we lost all the beehives this winter - for the first time in 8 years. I cleaned up the empty boxes today and it was very sad. We hope to start up again soon - but there have been many losses across Europe this winter and finding a colony is hard at the moment… 🐝💔

September 2021, the first weeks after getting the keys. The field was used for grazing horses for over 15 years. Manure was spread 4-5x a year. The process of making the soil poorer to increase biodiversity and reduce the pressure of the grasses will take 5-10 years. We do this through maintenance alone- by cutting and removing material, a helping hand to create a wildflower meadow for pollinators.

September 2021, the first weeks after getting the keys. This dead tree was there first bit of garden maintenance we undertook - cutting it down before the winter. The stump is left and now used as a bird feeder. You can see how overgrown the “garden” behind was. The view of the lovely needle tree and its distinctly shaped trunk behind was obscured.

Let’s look back at early 2022 - when we began the cleanup of a garden that had been abandoned for 20 years. Overgrown with brambles and nettles - we removed them to open up the space and be able to see some of the trees which we plan to keep as anchors in the garden in the future. Grass is temporary until the borders can be created. But first we need agreement from the municipality on the buildings - in order to finalize the garden design!
