The significance of geometric patterns and symbolic motifs in West African traditions.
How sustainable practices and eco-friendly dyes are shaping the future of the brand.

Seydou is a man who leads with quiet strength and boundless joy. In his early fifties, he is a devoted father of seven children — four of whom share his hearing impairment — and every decision he makes is rooted in providing for and protecting his family.
Living as a Christian minority in Muslim-majority Niger, one of the world’s most challenging places to build a life, Seydou does not just endure — he thrives. The happiness that radiates from him and his household is the kind that cannot be manufactured. It is earned, and it is real.
Seydou is the heart behind Gracist’s home line. The pillows, wall hangings, and accessories that bring warmth and beauty into homes around the world are crafted by his hands. His skill is exceptional, his attention to detail unmistakable, and his work ethic is something to behold.
The income from his craft does more than create beautiful pieces — it sends his children to school. It keeps his family whole. It gives them a future.
I met Seydou on one of my early trips to Niger and was immediately moved by his story. We did not want to offer charity — we wanted to offer partnership. There is a dignity in earning that nothing else can replace, and Seydou deserves every bit of it.
It is an honor to have him in the Gracist family.

El Hadj is a self-taught Fulani artist from Niger whose extraordinary talent spans every medium he touches — leather, beads, hammered metal, intricate stitching, and beyond. Born into the rich nomadic heritage of his people, he grew up shaping tradition with his hands, developing a precision and artistry that is entirely his own.
We call him the African Michelangelo — and anyone who has watched him work understands why. The range, the detail, the instinct — it is something you simply cannot teach. El Hadj came to it all on his own, and that makes every piece he creates even more remarkable.
He is not just a collaborator — he is family. As Niger Team Lead, El Hadj is an intricate and irreplaceable part of what makes Gracist what it is. His fingerprints are on everything we do, and we are better for it.
Recently married, El Hadj is building a life that reflects everything he puts into his craft — intention, beauty, and depth. It is an honor to stand alongside him as he steps into this new chapter.
We are proud to call him ours, and even prouder that the world gets to know his name.

Jeanne — The Tailoress
Jeanne Agbodan was born on April 13, 1991, in Lomé, Togo, the second of seven siblings. When financial hardship closed the door to higher education, Jeanne didn’t wait for another door to open — she built one herself. From 2007 to 2010, she trained in sewing, then pushed further, mastering the art of clothing for women and children with a precision and passion that would come to define her.
With nothing but determination and her own savings, she made the bold decision to leave Togo for Niger — one of the most challenging places in the world to build a life, let alone a business. She apprenticed under a local tailor, learned everything she could, and by 2012 had opened her very own shop. It was there that she met her husband Edouard at church. They married a year later and today are the proud parents of four beautiful daughters — a full, vibrant household that Jeanne pours her heart into every single day, while also running her business and co-pastoring alongside Edouard in service to their community.
I first met Jeanne in 2020 on my first trip to Niger, and I was stopped in my tracks. Her skill, patience, and eye for detail spoke of someone who had given everything to her craft. She has since become one of the most essential voices behind Gracist — not just as a maker, but as a mentor. Jeanne takes young girls under her wing, teaching them to sew and giving them the tools to build independent lives, shielding them from early marriage and opening futures they may never have imagined. She has already graduated seven apprentices into their own thriving businesses, with fourteen more currently in her care.
Jeanne and Edouard are family to me. Every piece she creates carries the weight of her journey — the resilience of a woman who built something remarkable from very little, in one of the poorest countries in the world, all while raising four girls beside a husband who works tirelessly for their family. Her work is not just clothing. It is faith sewn into fabric, love stitched into every seam.
We are honored to carry her story — and her artistry — on Gracist.
