Happy to share that both Dual Casual and Catich Color were selected at this year’s Type Directors Club @typedirectorsTDC72 competition. #tdc72

Dual Casual grows out of sign painting. It’s loose and flexible, built as a variable system that moves across styles and moods.
Catich Color comes from a more educational place, exploring Roman Capitals through brush construction and the thinking of Fr. Edward Catich. It translates stroke logic into a color font.

Both projects come from very different directions, but they share the same curiosity about how letters are built and how they behave.

Taller Intensivo: Romanas Monumentales con Gen Ramírez

En este taller introductorio de dos días exploraremos las raíces históricas, la anatomía y la lógica constructiva de las Romanas Monumentales a partir del modelo analítico desarrollado por Edward Catich.

A lo largo del taller, analizaremos las propiedades estilísticas y los elementos estructurales de las Romanas Monumentales para comprender su evolución dentro de la escritura latina. Esta base histórica no solo amplía nuestra mirada, sino que proporciona herramientas concretas para tomar decisiones formales sólidas en el diseño de tipografías.

El trabajo será eminentemente práctico. Los participantes construirán letras trazo por trazo, entendiendo su geometría esencial, su esqueleto y su sistema proporcional. Gradualmente se incorporará mayor complejidad en los detalles, permitiendo también espacios de experimentación y variación dentro del modelo.

A veces es útil practicar modelos más formales y clásicos. Aunque este ejercicio no intenta replicar la tipografía Óptima, sí hace referencia a la estructura, proporción e intención de letras romanas sin serifa.
Es importante observar cómo los trazos delgados y gruesos se generan principalmente mediante el cambio de presión del pincel. Esto contrasta con otros modelos, en los que los trazos gruesos se construyen mediante dos pasadas o dependen de la rotación de la punta del pincel para producir la variación entre delgado y grueso.

Taller Intensivo: Romanas Monumentales con Gen Ramírez

En este taller introductorio de dos días exploraremos las raíces históricas, la anatomía y la lógica constructiva de las Romanas Monumentales a partir del modelo analítico desarrollado por Edward Catich.

Las investigaciones de Catich sobre las inscripciones romanas clásicas demostraron que las letras no fueron concebidas primero en piedra, sino trazadas con pincel y posteriormente talladas. Sus hallazgos transformaron la manera en que entendemos la proporción, el ritmo y el contraste del alfabeto romano, y continúan siendo fundamentales para la práctica tipográfica contemporánea.

A lo largo del taller, analizaremos las propiedades estilísticas y los elementos estructurales de las Romanas Monumentales para comprender su evolución dentro de la escritura latina.
