“Running and its meaning have certainly evolved over the years. As a kid, my relationship with it was similar to many others: Running a quick timed mile and getting dubbed “the fast kid” for the rest of elementary school. It is natural to revel in celebrity status and enjoy the attention. In American sports especially, we are taught from a very young age to be hyper competitive and go for gold, so what mattered most to me in that period of my life was medals and times.
However, as my running career has continued, I’ve begun to appreciate running for running’s sake rather than the things it gives me or the concrete results associated with it. Whether it’s the sounds of nature on a quiet trail, or the satisfying feeling of watching the miles and fitness compound over time, I have a great respect and appreciation for the process of running rather than the results.
I’ve also experienced a lot of the “ugly” of the sport: injuries, iron deficiency, mental health struggles, etc., which forced me to confront who I am without running.
I mentioned that as a kid I constructed my identity around running, and the fact that I’m still a runner now has made it almost inseparable from who I am. I used to be quite terrified about thinking who I would be without it, but through injuries and the sport itself, I’ve learned my identity lies in hard work, discipline, care, and pushing others around me to achieve the best versions of themselves. Running just happens to be the thing I apply my principles to.”
