A refresh of An Garda Síochána’s Coastal Watch in the Southern Region was launched on Wednesday in Castletownbere Co. Cork, by Assistant Commissioner for the Southern Region, Eileen Foster.

The Assistant Commissioner reminder those attending that, “Coastal Watch Is not just about policing, it is about presence, awareness, prevention and partnership”.

A refresh of An Garda Síochána’s Coastal Watch in the Southern Region was launched today in Castletownbere Co. Cork, by Assistant Commissioner for the Southern Region, Eileen Foster.

Coastal Watch’s purpose is to raise awareness and encourage those who live, work, or use the coast, to report unusual activity to help prevent and detect crime.

It is a community-based, crime-prevention initiative involving residents, businesses, landowners, Government agencies, voluntary emergency services and An Garda Síochána. Coastal Watch is not just about policing, it is about presence, awareness, prevention and partnership.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Commissioner Foster stated,

"Coastal Watch has been in existence for over 30 years and has proved to be a success. However, personnel in organisations, landowners near coastline and communities change with the passage of time. Therefore, it is important to re-energising Coastal Watch through persistent, clear engagement with our coastal communities and ensuring that Coastal Watch continues to operate effectively".

An Garda Síochána and the@irishhealthservice today officially announced their support of the Herbert Protocol, at the International Dementia Conference in the Athlone Springs Hotel.

The Herbert Protocol is a form that holds important information about a person living with dementia, including a description of what they look like, a recent photo, any medication they take, and places from their past where they find comfort and familiarity.

​The launch marks a significant step in community policing and integrated healthcare, ensuring that when a vulnerable person goes missing, the state’s response is both rapid and informed.

​The Herbert Protocol form is now available for download on the Garda.ie website.

Families are encouraged to keep a printed copy in a prominent place at home and to provide a digital copy to trusted family members.

At today's launch, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said that:

“Being a Garda is a tough job, but I know from personal experience how rewarding it can be. There are not many jobs where you can make a positive difference to people and communities every day.

It can also offer career opportunities in varied and interesting roles. As a Garda you can make a significant contribution to public safety through a variety of roles, including community policing, investigating domestic abuse, and tackling organised crime.

I want to encourage people from all backgrounds to join An Garda Síochána. It is important that we represent the communities we serve.
Being a Garda is definitely a job worth doing.”
