STRATIFIED WIND CLEFTS OF AUREX-9

On the dry exoplanet Aurex-9, constant mineral-laden winds have shaped the surface for millions of years. The planet’s thin atmosphere and higher gravity suppress large-scale water erosion, leaving wind and sand as the dominant sculpting forces.

Over time, softer sediment layers were stripped away faster than harder mineral bands. This process carved narrow clefts, stepped plateaus and fractured openings into the rock, allowing light to penetrate deep into the formation. The result is a compressed, canyon-like cave system shaped almost entirely by lateral wind erosion.

The colors are not surface stains, but exposed geological strata. Iron-rich layers oxidized into deep reds and ambers, while copper- and cobalt-bearing minerals formed blue and turquoise bands embedded within the stone. Wind erosion gradually peeled these layers open, revealing them like a natural geological cross-section.

Clear turquoise water collects only in the lowest depressions, saturated with dissolved minerals that scatter light and give the pools their intense color and near-glass clarity.

Life is minimal. Only mineral-adapted moss survives in shaded crevices where moisture lingers. Its pale, almost calcified appearance reflects the low organic content of the environment. Small red-orange flowers appear briefly during rare seasonal shifts, then disappear again.

A quiet place.

This started as a study in movement more than in form.
The real challenge was getting a clean, linear camera drift and turning it into a perfect loop — so the motion disappears and the world just keeps going.

What emerged feels like an alien coral system: not underwater, but growing on a planet with low gravity, where structures can expand outward instead of collapsing inward. The clustered growth behaves like reef formations suspended in air rather than water.

The turquoise and orange tones could be explained by a dense mineral-rich atmosphere and unusual light scattering — shorter wavelengths penetrating deeper, while heavier particles reflect warmer spectra back into the environment.

I’ve been experimenting with AI as a tool again lately, but this time with more control. Now that I’ve figured out how to build seamless looping motion, I’m planning to explore this space a bit more.
