Kids in Film: a hobby or career move?? 🎬

This topic comes up a lot with new acting families because once you really step into this industry it can be a wild ride and one many are not anticipating...

So IMO 💁🏻‍♀️⬇️

Acting should absolutely start as (and can forever be!) a HOBBY ✨
It should be fun, creative, confidence-building, and a place where kids get to explore, play, take risks, and be a little ridiculous sometimes!

But once you step into the professional side of the industry, we need to understand how the expectations shift.

Now there are deadlines. Self-tapes need to be submitted on time. Direction needs to be taken and adjusted quickly. People are relying on you to show up prepared, focused, and consistent.

Because while this industry can be incredibly fun, it’s still a professional working environment - even for kids! Acting classes are one thing. Professional sets are another. 👀

The good news? Young actors can hold both.
They can love it AND learn responsibility. They can be playful AND professional. (A balance that just takes practice!)

And if your family decides this stays a hobby? That’s completely okay too! There’s no prize for rushing into the “career” side before your child is ready for it.

But if your young actor does want to pursue this professionally, the best thing you can do is walk in with clear expectations, good support (AKA your TEAM!), and a strong foundation.

That’s when young actors really thrive! 🪩

From mastering drama and crying on cue to being completely unafraid to go full ridiculous in comedy, Logan does it all with a natural ease that you just can’t teach. She’s out here auditioning across networks - with callbacks and pins galore might I add!! - and proving she can do anything they throw her way. 👏🏻

When she’s not booking and crushing auditions, she’s consistently putting in the reps in her private acting classes AND competing across multiple dance styles like the absolute powerhouse she is. Acting, dancing, thriving - the true queen of the arts! 💅 (what CAN’T she do??)

Chemistry Read = do these humans spark on screen?

A Chem Read is when casting tests how two (or more) actors connect - whether romantically, familiarly, platonically… even chaotically 😏

When do they happen: Later in the process - usually after callbacks - and only if production needs to see the dynamic.

Why it matters: Chemistry can’t be faked. It helps protect the story, tone, and gives producers + directors confidence before committing to us.

Who’s in the room: Casting team, usually the director, sometimes producers/network execs - and the other actors you’re reading with!

How to approach it: Stay present, listen more than you “act,” and stay adaptable. At this stage, it’s about fit, connection and play - not proving talent. (You’ve already done it at this point!)

✨ REMEMBER: Not booking after a chem read typically means a mismatch (chemistry or looks-wise) - NOT a bad audition!

🤫🎬 PSA for new actors (& parents 👀): not every self tape needs a group chat debut.

Yes - auditions bring that burst of energy, momentum, and omg-we’re-busy excitement. But a gentle reminder that self tape info is top secret for a reason. 🤐

Sometimes everyone’s auditioning for the same role… sometimes it’s a very exclusive invite list. Either way: confidentiality + NDAs = non-negotiable (and gold-star behavior, parents ✨).

Find your people. Love them fiercely. And be mindful of how much you share along the way. Your agent or manager? Totally in the loop. Your acting coach? ONLY if we’re coaching you in this specific role, then yes we need to see the material in order to do so AND we are respecting that confidentiality too.

Everyone else? Maybe not. Especially when those innocent “did you get this audition too??” convos can spiral into unsolicited advice, comparison, or vibes we simply don’t need.

Protect your kid’s peace. Protect your peace. And let’s not get caught up in what I lovingly call ‘the noise’ of kid auditions.

Let’s talk CALL SHEETS 👀

As an actor, you will 1000% be given a #callsheet at some point in your career. Like, every time you go to work on set. So this is not optional reading!

A call sheet is the daily roadmap for a shoot day. It tells you:
• WHEN you’re needed (ahem your call time)
• WHERE you’re going (location)
• WHAT you’re shooting (scenes/pages)
• WHO you’re working with (cast + crew for the day)
• Plus the boring-but-important stuff: parking, weather, meals, wardrobe notes, emergency contacts and beyond.

Think of it as:
📄 part schedule
📄 part survival guide
📄 part “don’t be late or confused” manual

Pro Tip! they can look a little overwhelming at first glance… so read it fully. Then read it again! (& three more times to be safe!).

Your calm, prepared, professional energy starts with your call sheet. 😉
