I was so excited when @archenemyarts invited me to be in their show inspired by stories written by the Grimm brothers. I have loved the tale of Little Snow White since I was a kid. I watched it on repeat (apologies to my siblings and cousins who sat through every rewatch. 😅)

In this piece Snow White is depicted in the magical mirror that belongs to the evil queen. Everyday the queen asks “Mirror Mirror on the Wall, who is the fairest of them all?” To her dismay the mirror tells her that Snow White is the fairest in the land. In the Grimm brothers tale the queen tries to poison Snow White 3 times and finally succeeds with an apple. I imagined Snow White protected by the seven dwarves in their cottage while the queen swirls around her with her evil magic. 🍎✨

When @nannygoatgallery asked me to do a piece for the Prose Group show inspired by a book, I knew I had to make a painting inspired by The Stormlight Archive by @brandsanderson @dragonsteelbooks This painting was inspired by book 5 “Wind and Truth” which was released in December. I don’t think I’ve been giddy for a book release since I was a kid waiting for the Harry Potter series release!

*Spoiler Warning*

This painting depicts chapter 144 titled “The Tower, The Crown and the Spear” when Kaladin joins the heralds. He’s surrounded by the Spren and Syl as he ascends. The circle of 9 remaining heralds await with their swords ready to form the circle of ten. At the same time the God, Retribution, is boiling with anger when he realizes what the circle of ten have done to protect the Spren. The Wind is depicted as a star at the top of the painting. I imagined her as a guiding light who formulated the plan.

@brandsanderson did a magnificent job of describing old oil paintings of the heralds in the books. I don’t typically choose ornamented frames but I wanted to keep in the theme of the book. I imagined this painting could exist in the series where one of the characters could find it hanging somewhere on the walls of Urithiru.

While Hades represented the inevitability of death, Persephone brought hope, mercy, and renewal. She ensured that the realm of the dead was as much about rest, peace, and eventual rebirth as it was about finality.

This is my final drawing out of three I prepared for @postcard_show at @nucleushouse_ in Portland, OR. All three drawing are available through the gallery. 🌟
