Eve Beglarian, who composed the kaleidoscopic “only your dolls,” dives deep into the life and work of Anne Sexton. She reflects on her creative process, wrestling with how to synthesize Sexton’s troubling past with this tender and haunting text.

We are thrilled to present “finish what I haven’t started,” a BASS commission by the groundbreaking composer Eve Beglarian. The work delves into mid-century middle-class female unhappiness, and sets texts by Anne Sexton, Jane Bowles, Lucille Clifton, and others. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a “humane, idealistic rebel and a musical sensualist,” Beglarian’s work defies boundaries, from orchestral compositions to multimedia explorations and a song cycle inspired by her solo kayak journey down the Mississippi River.
Here is the opening song from the work from the world premiere performed by mezzo soprano Devony Smith and pianist Danny Zelibor.
