Estelle Tcha holds a practice that spans across painting, installation, and sculpture, with a material focus on charcoal-and-gesso technique, pigment exploration, textiles, and constructed forms sourced from nature. Her works are often developed through repetition and accumulation, emphasizing surface, density, and physical presence. Grounded in Western formal training, the work maintains a strong commitment to composition, scale, and material discipline, while remaining adaptable across spatial and performative contexts.
Conceptually, her practice is informed by Eastern thought, approaches themes like cyclicality, connection, and continuity. Painting the Sun, the water that it evaporates, the wind that carries it, and the clouds that it forms. Drawing the eternity that exists within this cyclicality.
태양은 끊임없이 생명의 불씨를 지펴주고, 물은 그 흐름을 이어주며, 구름은 생명을 머물게 한다. 소나무는 사계절을 견디고, 대나무는 휘어져도 꺾이지 않는다. 학은 영적 세계로의 초월을 상징하며, 거북은 등껍질에 우주의 지혜를 싣는다. 사슴은 조화 속에서 번성하고, 불로초는 영원한 청춘을 부여하며, 산은 변함없이 세상의 축으로 서 있다. 각각의 형상은 영생을 ‘변치 않는 영원함’으로서가 아니라, 관계 속에서 이어지는 연속성으로서 구현된다.

《염원을 지닌다는 것에 대하여: The Weight of the Desire We Carry》

Rooted in the cyclical themes that define Tcha’s practice, this exhibition draws from sipjangsaeng (십장생, ten symbols of longevity) imagery and repositions it as a set of living vessels for memory and authorship. The project asks what it means to carry the weight of yeomwon (염원, yearning, desire, wish), and whether authorship can be shared without dissolving the integrity of the work.
By linking yeomwon to a gamified process of bidding and symbolic ownership, the installation considers how intangible emotions may be measured, distributed, and re-embodied across both physical and digital forms. The structure reframes a philosophical question through a participatory system, inviting viewers to collectively consider its weight and encounter their own moments of illumination.

《염원을 지닌다는 것에 대하여: The Weight of the Desire We Carry》

Rooted in the cyclical themes that define Tcha’s practice, this exhibition draws from sipjangsaeng (십장생, ten symbols of longevity) imagery and repositions it as a set of living vessels for memory and authorship. The project asks what it means to carry the weight of yeomwon (염원, yearning, desire, wish), and whether authorship can be shared without dissolving the integrity of the work.
By linking yeomwon to a gamified process of bidding and symbolic ownership, the installation considers how intangible emotions may be measured, distributed, and re-embodied across both physical and digital forms. The structure reframes a philosophical question through a participatory system, inviting viewers to collectively consider its weight and encounter their own moments of illumination.

<Earth — Cyclicality — Eternity : 영생(營生)의 염원(念願) III>, 162.2 x 130.3 cm (2), charcoal and gesso on canvas, 2025
The series <Earth — Cyclicality — Eternity> is a sequence of reinterpretations of the traditional “Sipjangseng (십장생, 十長生)” of Korea, a traditional painting and symbolic system meaning “Ten Symbols of Longevity”, ten elements represent nature’s endurance and the human wish for eternal life, health, and prosperity.
Yet unlike conventional depictions, each symbol interconnects with the rest as part of the cyclical vitality of life. What appears eternal in Sipjangsaeng is in fact endurance born of cyclical interdependence, and ultimate impermanence. The concept of eternity is not elsewhere, but in the dialogue between interdependent beings in the current.
In using a repetitive process of continuous mark making with charcoal, a “beginning” of a mark with the “ending” of a life, and erasure with gesso, an “ending” of a mark with the “beginning” tool of painting, physicality is formed by the continuous build-up of remnants.
<영생(營生)의 염원(念願) III>는 한국 전통 십장생(十長生)을 동시대적으로 재해석한 연작의 세 번째 작업으로, 해, 산, 물, 구름, 소나무, 대나무, 학, 거북, 사슴, 불로초 등 자연의 지속성을 상징하는 요소들로 구성된다. 십장생은 고정되고 장엄한 상징으로 존재하지 않는다. 각각의 형상은 서로 얽히고 흐르며 하나의 유기적 장을 형성한다. 영원은 불변의 상태가 아니라, 관계 속에서 이어지는 연속성으로 이루어진다.
목탄이 새로운 흔적의 시작이 되고 그 위에 덧입혀진 젯소는 지움이자 갱신이 될때 비로소 소멸과 생성이 교차하는 순환의 과정이 만들어진다. 목탄은 나무가 타고 난 마지막 모습으로 ‘끝’이자 그림의 ‘시작’이며, 제소는 그림을 그릴 천 위에 칠하는 재료로 ‘시작’이자 목탄으로 그리는 그림을 덮어버리는 ‘끝’이기도 하다. 이렇게 그리기와 덮기, 존재와 비존재가 교차하는 리듬 속에서 화면은 하나의 축적된 시간의 장이 된다. 이는 ‘색즉시공 공즉시색’의 사유처럼, 형상과 공(空)이 서로를 전제하며 순환하는 구조를 드러낸다.
영원함을 염원 하는 마음의 움직임은 반복되는 흔적과 지움 속에 투영되고, 화면은 끝을 향해 가면서도 다시 시작되는 순환의 궤적을 드러낸다.
