Every year @olsonkundig hosts an internal design competition for the office submission for Seattle Design Festival.

The theme is:
IN [FLUX]
IN [TENSION]
IN [FORM]
IN [HABIT]

Typically, submissions are done in teams of 2-4. I went at this one alone, to challenge myself to dream up an idea and see it through. My colleagues are all incredibly talented and by the time I’d be able to come up with an idea, no doubt my peers would’ve come up with 5.

FOR THE LOVE OF CHAIRS part 3

Please welcome this understated chair. The top acts as a free cantilever, negating the need for vertical support. It’s composed of laminated plywood, which is somehow as strong as bent tube steel. AND it was designed by an architect, which gives it 10 extra points in my book.

Chair: No. 31 by Alvar Aalto
Table: Hew Side Table, Style D by Designs Within Reach
Art: Roy Lichtenstein from 1965. This is on sale on 1st Dibs for $35,000 if you happen to be interested
Chandelier: Ventiquattro Sputnik Chandelier by Fabio Bergomi
Plant: Faux Cactus at West Elm. I don’t buy fake plants, but they work for this form of art. Don’t crucify me.

FOR THE LOVE OF CHAIRS part 2

This is a cutie. It’s robust; it feels masculine enough to enjoy with a highball in hand. It’s playful: it delicately sits on its base as though it has a complete disregard for structure. It’s nostalgic: it evokes the 1960’s because it was indeed designed in the 1960’s.

Chair: Esfera Lounge Armchair 1969
Table: Ashby around Side Table in Rosso Levantine Marble (1st Dibs)
Rug: Evelina Kroon Ochre Fields Wool Rug (1st Dibs)
Artwork: Ducretet Thomson - 1960’s advertisement for televisions
Plant: I regret to inform you it’s fake and it’s from Potter Barn
Ashtray: RONXS outdoor ashtray

FOR THE LOVE OF CHAIRS part one

This chair is perfect for a thin backed, long femur, but short tibia sort of gal.

KEEP GOING.

Don’t wait for validation. Don’t wait for that door to open. Don’t wait for the perfect time. Opportunity is out there for you. You won’t find it sitting still.

Inspired by a door to a firework shop I spotted while driving.

I love a big and bold color moment.
