#OutdoorClassroomDay offers us the perfect opportunity reflect on something that has been part of life on the Estate for nearly 30 years.

Our annual Schools Days began in 1997, when Sir William Benyon first invited local children to discover more about the Estate, its history and the countryside around them.

That first event welcomed 315 children from five schools. In 2025, more than 1,400 pupils from 35 local schools spent the day exploring farming, forestry, habitats, history and food, led by Estate staff and local organisations who give their time and knowledge so generously.

We're looking forward to welcoming pupils back for Schools Days 2026.

Essential works will start next week (Thursday 28th May) to repair and re-point a section of the brick and flint wall that forms the boundary between Englefield Deer Park and Common Hill.

These works will be carried out by a highly skilled team with specialist experience of heritage masonry.

To ensure the safety of the team, temporary traffic lights will be in place along Common Hill for eight weeks from Wednesday 27th May. We apologise in advance for any disruption this may cause.

We recently shared a fascinating story about scorched beams that were uncovered in Englefield House last year.

Did you know that the fire that caused that damage was actually first spotted by Mrs Elizabeth Benyon?

The story goes that she was travelling along the Bath Road – now the A4 – on her way to a garden party at @ufton.court with her daughter, when she spotted smoke coming from Englefield House.

Today, we could use a mobile phone to raise the alarm, but back then she only had one option - and records report that she returned at “all speed”!

Despite the efforts of Englefield villagers and staff, parts of the building were destroyed, and where the fire started remains a mystery.

If you would like to find out more tap the link in our bio to visit page 26/27 of the Englefield Echo.

Our maintenance team had quite the shock last year, when they uncovered scorched wooden beams while repairing a glass lantern in Englefield House.

Initial concerns were that a hidden fire had been smouldering unseen in the roof of the house, and might break out again.

Upon investigation, the team found that the timbers were actually blackened almost 150 years prior to the discovery, when a major fire damaged a large portion of the building.

With immediate concerns settled, the team had to be sure the smoke-blackened beams were sound, and as it turned out… they were good as new! It seems the fire in 1886 actually served to harden them.

If you would like to find out more tap the link in our bio and visit page 26/27 of the Englefield Echo.

Our Education and Environment Officer, Dr Liz Mattison, made a fascinating discovery in the River Pang last week…

Native to rivers and streams in the UK, Brook Lamprey are amongst the most primitive vertebrates existing today - being jawless, and having a cartilage skeleton rather than bone.

They live under gravel and sand in their larval form for 3-7 years, but once they’re adults they can no longer feed, which means the fish in this video haven’t eaten anything since last Autumn! They are spawning now and will die once they have finished.

Have you spotted any Brook Lamprey local to you?

Five a Day Garden, based in Englefield Village, has created a tranquil space available to anyone that would benefit from being outdoors.

This #SocialPrescribingDay we are highlighting how they have created a welcoming community to enjoy nature, connect with others and do some gardening.

Their ‘Thyme Together’ group, aimed at supporting those aged over 75, has been particularly positive to the health and wellbeing of attendees.

None of this would be possible without the dedicated team who are in touch with local social prescribers as part of an ongoing effort to increase numbers and ensure that the Five a Day Market Garden is a nurturing environment for all.

Head over to their page for more.

Over the past couple of months, you may have seen us providing updates on the cover crops we are growing on the Estate.

Our supplier @cotswoldseeds has shared this fantastic graphic which explains how different cover crops can support soil structure and provide nutrients.

As we move towards regenerative farming principles, we are growing these crops not just for what they produce, but for what they do for our soil health.
