Iโve wanted to DJ since I was a teenager, but for one reason or another, I held myself back, cliche I know!
Music has always been around me. My dad managed a band in the 80s, and I grew up with my mum blasting Choice FM and Kiss 100 in the car. Instead of watching TV after school, Iโd sit at the computer digging for music on Napster and Limewire (only 90โs kids will know the pain of this!) then in my late teens I was in nightclubs and if I was sober enough, Iโd always be analysing the DJ! That blend of R&B and house is what shaped my sound as a DJ.
DJing was actually one of the courses I studied at university and as part of the final exam I had to do an all vinyl set; timeless soulful house tunes that Iโd still play out now. I got the top marks in my class ๐ค at least I was good at something even if it wasnโt exactly academic! But my boyfriend at the time was a DJ, and I didnโt want it to look like I was copying him, so I didnโt pursue it any further, which seems a bit mad looking back.
Fast forward to my 30th birthday and I thought - If I donโt do it now, itโs never going to happen. And Iโm not one who lives life wondering โwhat if?โ so I bought a controller and started practicing at home. I did a few little house parties here and there and gradually built my confidence up enough to play out.
Do I wish I pursued it 15 years ago? Yes! But better late than never, and if you know me well, youโll know that motto suits me down to a T!
