Reminder for this Thursday 💛🇧🇸💙

There’s always so much potential in each child. Sometimes it is just our mindset that is holding us back.

“Children learn best when they feel seen, supported, and connected to one another.” — Lev Vygotsky

As we close out the school year, we are so proud of the growth, friendships, and confidence these students built together. Now onto a summer filled with continued learning, creativity, and celebration.

This moment was captured by Bahamian photographer Melissa Alcena during her mini artist residency in Gregory Town, where she visited EEO centers and documented the children and community through her uniquely thoughtful lens.

Since the earliest days of EEO, educators like Marie Galanis have helped shape what this work means within our communities. As principal of Harbour Island All Age School during the beginning of EEO’s journey, she witnessed the importance of supporting students with learning differences early on.
💙Today, she continues that same dedication as part of the EEO family at Palmetto Point Primary.

Since 1999, EEO has been integrated within the communities we serve, growing through relationships, trust, and teachers who continue to show up for children every day.
🩵We are deeply grateful for each and every one of our teachers and the care they bring to this work.

Regardless of election outcomes, the responsibility of supporting children with learning differences across The Bahamas continues. We remain grateful for every teacher, parent, school leader, donor, and Ministry partner helping move inclusive education forward.

Anyone else love the thought of The Bahamas magnificence being shared internationally?

As Bahamian art shines at the Venice Biennale, we honor the power of experiencing and expressing the world through one’s own lens.

At EEO Bahamas, alongside the Ministry of Education (MOE), we carry that same responsibility by supporting children who learn differently and helping their strengths shine too. 💙🇧🇸🩵

Learning Comes to Life at the Center for Exceptional Learners in JC 🌱💚

We were so excited to welcome Dr Selima Hauber, Eleuthera resident and horticulture expert, to the Center for Exceptional Learners alongside EEO team members Gaby Hudson and Bonnie Drost as part of our Family Island Partnership.💚

Dr. Hauber guided students through the life cycle of a bean plant, teaching them what plants need to grow and the rewards of growing your own food. Students explored key vocabulary such as germination and photosynthesis while engaging in meaningful, hands-on learning.

Each student planted two bean seeds, one in a wet paper towel and ziplock bag to observe germination, and one in soil. Over the coming weeks, they will care for their plants and track their growth.

Experiences like this are so important. Learning directly from local experts and connecting lessons to real life helps build independence, confidence, and an appreciation for growing our own food. These are lifelong skills that students can carry with them well beyond the classroom.

Teachers who move.
Teachers who embrace.
Teachers who inspire.
Teachers who hug when a child needs comfort more than correction.
Teachers who pause long enough to truly meet a child where they are.

Teachers who understand that confidence matters.
That patience matters.
That feeling safe enough to try again matters.

Teachers who come back day after day with full hearts, even when they are exhausted.
Teachers who celebrate tiny breakthroughs that most of the world would never notice.
Teachers who later see their students grown in the community and feel proud beyond words.

For 25 years, EEO has been surrounded by teachers like this.
The kind who quietly change lives through consistency, compassion, and belief in children who simply needed someone to see them differently.

We are endlessly grateful for every one of you. 🤍

Progress is not always linear.

It’s in the glance up for reassurance,
the courage to try again,
the small moments that don’t always get measured.

Starting a new week by meeting each child where they are…
that’s where the real growth begins.

Friday moments like these remind us how powerful it is to meet children where they are and help them grow as readers.

A chance to support a child in reading, no matter where they are starting, is everything.

If you feel moved to help, we would be so grateful for support through book donations or contributions to keep this programming going.

Yesterday we held an individualized support session focused on specific student cases, bringing together teachers from across the Family Island Partnership, and their responses were incredible.

You could feel the shift in the room as strategies started to click. One teacher shared that a student who had been completely nonverbal is now beginning to engage through small, intentional prompts. Another left with a clearer plan to support a child struggling with regulation, saying it finally felt manageable.

These moments matter. They are small, but they change everything.

We’re so grateful to Mandy Alvarez and Integrated Children’s Therapy for the way they meet teachers where they are and help them better understand and support each child.

This afternoon we had another valuable Speech & Language Professional Development Session led by Amanda ‘Mandy’ Alvarez, founder of Integrated Children’s Therapy.

Looking back at photos from her visit last February for our autism workshop, it’s clear this is not a one time moment. It is continued, consistent support.

Mandy continues to show up for EEO with generosity, insight, and a deep understanding of what our teachers are navigating each day. We are so grateful for her ongoing support and the way she shares both her time and expertise so thoughtfully.

Today’s session focused on case studies, where she supported teachers with individualized, specific feedback to problem solve, better understand, and ultimately help the children in front of them. This was especially impactful for nonverbal students who may or may not be diagnosed on the autism spectrum. She meets teachers where they are and in doing so strengthens their ability to support each child.

Through our Family Island Partnership in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), this kind of work creates meaningful lasting impact. Thank you Mandy and thank you for all that are part of EEO.
